Moving from Edinburgh to Aberdeen
« on: March 02, 2011, 11:22:44 PM »
Hi there,

Just joined the forum recently and thought I would say hello :). I've been living in the beautiful city of Edinburgh for about 4 years now and am moving to Aberdeen soon for a job.

I really don't know ANYTHING about Aberdeen and would love to hear from those who live there about the nice parts of the city to live - or outer villages even.  I would also be interested to hear your thoughts on where to go/what to do :).

Any good or bad points about Aberdeen welcome as well.

Thanks so much and look forward to hearing from you.

Jennifer

Bad points - COLD AS DEATH ITSELF.

Good points - Aberdeen has improved immensely over the past 10 years.  There's a lot of people with a lot of money so there are really good restaurants and shops now.  It just has a much more modern "feel" to it now.  The flipside of it is you see/get hassled by a lot more junkies too but having lived in Edinburgh you'll be more than used to that.

I know a couple who lived in Aberdeen for a couple of years, and they were more than glad to see the back of it. If you can, try to live outside the city itself, because it can be really awful (especially after dark), but the countryside in Aberdeenshire is really gorgeous.
Arrived as student 9/2003; Renewed student visa 9/2006; Applied for HSMP approval 1/2008; HSMP approved 3/2008; Tier 1 General FLR received 4/2008; FLR(M) Unmarried partner approved (in-person) 27/8/2009; ILR granted at in-person PEO appointment 1/8/2011; Applied for citizenship at Edinburgh NCS 31/10/2011; Citizenship approval received 4/2/2012

Hi everyone - thanks so much for the replies :)

I was reading elsewhere about living outside the city, so definitely something to consider.

@CW - I am moving for a job that is not financial services or insurance (these 2 industries rule in southern Scotland and I am not into either one of them as they really are a daily snoozefest). I have a great opportunity with a global firm up in Aberdeen and am going on my final interview on Monday.

I will take some time next week to look around before making a final decision. Any other thoughts on areas I should consider are most welcome. :)

I live about 6 miles west of Aberdeen in an area called Maryculter. It feels like living in the country but only takes about 10 minutes to get to Aberdeen when traffic is light. My husband works right down in the harbor area and it's an easy commute. Your decision on where to live will be somewhat influenced by where your office will be as traffic can be an absolute nightmare. Popular commuter areas are Peterculter, Milltimber, Bieldside, Cults, Westhill and Kingswells.
If you'd like more info or want to pick my brain about Aberdeen just send me a PM.

Hi Lee,

Thanks so much for the offer. I did not actually end up taking the job, but thank you for offering.

Best regards,

Jennifer
