Splurge because hubby likes Heinz.

Laundry soap.

Save by buying what is on sale of the better brands, but splurge by not buying the cheapest because they don't do much for grease.

Special occasion shoes.

Save--not the absolute cheapest (like Payless) but mostly mid-range brands and preferably on sale.

Computers.

Save; whatever you buy is obsolete by the time you unpack it  ;) plus you won't ever use most of the real high-tech stuff that drives the prices up.

Microwave (having done without one for 10 months, after having one since 1974)
Married December 1992 (my 'old flame' whom I first met in the mid-70s)
1st move to UK - 1993 (Letter of Consent granted at British Embassy in Washington DC)
ILR - 1994 (1 year later - no fee way back then!)
Back to US in 2000
Returned to UK July 2011 (Spousal Visa/KOL endorsement)
ILR - September 2011
Application for naturalization submitted July 2014
Approval received 15-10-14; ceremony scheduled for 10 November!
Passport arrived 25 November 2014. Finally done!

Save by getting the cheaper ones. With technology being what it is these days, the cheaper ones are nearly as good quality, or just as good without paying for the brand name.

Make-up.

Mostly save. The few times I've splurged (got caught up in the hype that something was going to transform me into a supermodel), I was disappointed.  :P

I splurged years ago, about bought a $27 leather Dayrunner organizer (calendar, address book, memo pad, calendar, places for business cards, zippered pouch etc) thing which was quite extravagant for my age and wage, and have used the heck out of it since, and only have to buy calendar refills for it yearly, and the occasional memo pad refill. It is very low tech and not very exciting, but after all these years it is more or less an extension of my brain, and I'd be lost without it. I am sure I'd easily adapt to something higher tech, but I have my laptop for that, and the low tech one for out and about.

Mostly save, by buying the mid-priced ones, and other than ones I use often, I don't buy them unless I find a recipe that calls for them. Once bought, I find other recipes that call for them.

New clothes for going on holiday.

That seems to be a British thing to me.  I don't remember people buying new clothes in the US specifically because they were going on vacation.  I'll say save because unless there's something I really need, I won't get anything new just because I'm going on holiday.  And I'd probably find it in a charity shop if I did!

That one was inspired by MIL, who has been buying things off and on for her trip to the States in Aug. Every year I have been here, she will buy me things in the months leading up to our visit to Indiana, and tell me to 'put this away and you can wear it on your hols'. I never have bought new clothes specifically for going away.

As far as cosmetics, save. I used to wear them all the time, but now it seems I see lines I don't otherwise notice if I wear foundation  :o so I skip the rest, except eyeliner.

Window washers

We don't pay anyone to wash our windows and barely ever do it ourselves, so that would be 'save'!
