Dependants
« on: March 09, 2011, 12:55:57 PM »
How would I list my children on the 1040? I've never had to do this and I'm a bit confuddled. Jon is listed on my tax form as a non resident alien and I've marked it as married, filing seperately.

Would I include them as my dependants or could I just ignore it all and consider them Jon's dependants?

If I have to list them, what do I do about their SSN? They don't have one. I've yet to register their births with the embassy (something I keep meaning to do).

Thanks for any help.

I'm pretty sure you need their social security numbers to claim them. But you should have time to get them before you need to file?

Ah, no, according to the SSA website it takes 12 weeks and I'll need proof of citizenship which I don't have for them. I'll just wing it and leave them off this year. I don't plan on getting their passports until later this year, I can do it after then.

As you're not getting their passports soon, then that makes sense. But in general, 12 weeks would be okay as the deadline for filing is extended for overseas filers.

Yep, I believe you have until June 15. If you need additional time you can request an extension until October 15:

If you do run short of time, leave them off for now and file your return. Once you have all the necessary information, simply file an amended return this time with all your dependents listed. You have 3 years to amend a tax return. There is no issue here ...
