My Trip to the Embassy
« on: March 09, 2011, 01:10:52 PM »
So the little man is finally a US citizen! The whole experience was relatively painless to be honest.

We applied to register his birth (sept 2010) his SSN and passport. I made the appointment online, and made sure to get one of the first appointments available, 8am. I was a bit dead to the world considering we drove through the night from Liverpool- we wanted to avoid early morning traffic. Our printer packed up on us, so we didn't have our conformation page or the DS-2029 pre filled out to just hand over to them. All this didn't matter however- They had a list of appointments and just checked us in.

We waited about 20 minutes for our number to be called, the embassy worker handed us the DS-2029, the SSN form and the Passport application. I took me about 20 minutes to fill them all out- handed them and the baby's birth certificate, our marriage certificate, our passports, and our divorce papers (previous marriages). They disappeared with all of that and about 30 minutes later called us back to ask me a few more questions. I had a passport when I was 3 months old, and didn't have it with me- so I had to answer a few questions about that. Plus my proof of divorce wasn't as clear cut as my husbands so I had to explain the form I turned in a bit. They seemed satisfied with my answers- we paid our fees for the register of birth (100 dollars) and the passport application (105 dollars) and waited just 5 more minutes and then they called us up again. The embassy worker handed us back all our paper work and told us that in 2 weeks his American Passport would arrive, and that in 2 months we should receive his SSN.  Done! Pretty quick and super painless! We had little mans passport photo done at a store in Liverpool and actually handed them 7 different photo's because we weren't sure if any of them would be accepted (little guy is a wiggler!)

All in all we were there from 8am to 10:15am. Hopefully this will help answer and questions or calm any fears or anxiety any one has about the process! So happy we got this done, now it just spouse visa to worry about! :D
We stole countries with the cunning use of flags. Just sail around the world and stick a flag in. "I claim India for Britain!" They're going "You can't claim us, we live here! Five hundred million of us!" "Do you have a flag …? "What? We don't need a flag, this is our home, you bastards" "No flag, No Country, You can't have one! Those are the rules... that I just made up!...and I'm backing it up with this gun, that was lent to me from the National Rifle Association."

This sounds like good news. Question though: How young can the baby be to do all this? Our first child is due at the end of October, and we would like to travel for Christmas, but that is looking rather unlikely.

Our baby was 17 days old when we went!  It could probably have been even sooner, but we took the first available appointment to get the baby's long form birth certificate and our embassy appointment was 2 days later.

His passport came back 16 working days later.

 ;D
