You're only supposed to count people who are actually there.

No, you are supposed to count people who usually live at that address.  You don't leave yourself off just because you are temporarily travelling somewhere else.

Yeah, I'm going to be staying in a hotel on the 27th, but I'll be filling out my census and sending it off as if I were actually in my flat, since that is where I live.

There are sections at the back of the form that say:

Households away on 27 March 2011
If this address is unoccupied overnight on 27 March 2011 because the whole household is away, the questionnaire should be completed as soon as possible upon their return

and

People Temporarily Away from Home
Anyone who is temporarily away from their permanent home or family home on 27 March 2011 should be included at their home address in Household questions (H1 to H3 and H6) and Individual questions (1 to 43). This includes people who are:

- staying or expecting to stay in an establishment such as a hospital, care home or hostel, for less than 6 months
- living away from home while working, on holiday, or travelling (unless outside the UK for 12 months or more
- members of the armed forces
- staying at their second address
- visiting friends or relatives
- in prison on remand (for any length of time), or sentenced to less than 6 months' imprisonment.

See that's the problem for us. We're leaving on the afternoon of the 27th, staying in a hotel for 3 days & then leaving the country on the 30th. So we're not returning to our previous address. So would I need to fill out the census? My brain just refuses to figure this out for itself  ???

Weby, it still seems obvious to me.  You ARE in your house on the 27th.  You may not be there the whole day, but you are there on the day of the census--therefore, you fill it out for your address that you are at the morning of the 27th.  If it came on the 28th, you possibly wouldn't fill it out.

Just remember to obfuscate all of your answers.  The Census (in England and Wales anyway), is being administered by a subsidiary of Lockhead Martin, not only purveyors of excellent ways of killing large numbers of people in one go, but also an American company subject to the Patriot Act.  Despite assurances from the UK government to the contrary, I bet US intelligence agencies are salivating to get their hands on this data. Given the UK's propensity to fork over whatever the US asks for, it won't be long before your data is passed along to the "proper authorities".

Hmmm... IMHO, I doubt the US authorities would be too fussed about me or 98% of others on UKY.  Besides, if they wanted to find us, they'd find us. One way or another.

But if people want to protest for that reason, more power to them.
I am proud to be counted in Scotland!

Did anybody happen to catch Hardeep Singh Kohli's Alternative Census on BBC radio?  By chance, I heard a couple episodes and it was wonderful.  It made me want to go out and have those kinds of conversations with my neighbors.  :)

I did! It was great, wasn't it?  ;D
I'm not sure about the Lockheed Martin/taking data thing.  As far as I can tell, the questions are not really all that useful for the sort of profiling the article is talking about (especially as the religion question is optional isn't it? Is that the question people are thinking might put them on a list?). Also, the constant reference to its length kind of annoys me, as it's only 32 pages if you have six people in residence, most of the pages are duplicates. I would be more worried about the issues mentioned later in the article, of councils losing out on funding because they are undercounted. This was a HUGE problem where I lived in SoCal, as many of the residents were nervous about things like the census (even if they were legal residents, there was a lot of misinformation/paranoia), and we had issues with hospitals and schools not getting the accurate information/stats that they needed.

THere isn't any data that already isn't on my US tax return.  I can't say I understand the reason for concern.

Perhaps for those people who haven't completed a US tax return?!

Given most people need to file a US tax return, I would say they have bigger concerns than the census.

I think what he's pointing out is that most people filling out the UK census do not file US tax returns. US expats are a very small portion of the UK population.

Just remember to obfuscate all of your answers.  ...

And if you do this successfully, they'll come by and just ask you in person for your answers...

Honestly, the US government has enough to worry about.  They really don't care about what the vast majority of their own citizens get up to.  Let alone those of another country.
