Buttermilk
« on: March 13, 2011, 04:07:30 AM »
I know that buttermilk is easily available at most big supermarkets, but usually in small containers...but i finally found a 1 liter bottle at my local farm shop!  The brand is called Blackmore Vale, I think it may be a South Somerset dairy, but its local to East Devon/Somerset.  So if you're ever in the Axminster area pop in to Miller's Farm Shop.

1 tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice and then enough milk to make up a cup.

I'm jealous that you can find it in small containers. I've only ever found it in 1 L bottles here and I end up throwing most of it away. Fortunately it's super cheap, but I still feel guilty. I've made my own in the past with lemon juice, but I like having the real stuff and since I can find it, I use it!

One delicious way to use up all that buttermilk to marninate chicken in it! Regulary milk works fine too but I prefer buttermilk for this. You'll need lots of milk either. The result is tender, juicy chicken when baked! ;)
We met in Tokyo through friends when we both lived in Japan.

Last year we moved to Thailand, got our first apartment together, got jobs with the same employer (!), didn't end up killing each other, got married, and decided to move to the UK to settle down.

London, here we come!

You can also make buttermilk by making butter, and as a bonus you get butter!

I wonder if you could make porridge / oatmeal using buttermilk.  I know it's possible, but how would it taste?  Just trying to think of creative ways to use it up.  :-\\\\

My grandfather used to drink it!  :-X

I don't know....sounds kinda gross! I'm sure I could just make even more baked goods with it, but I'm just not that into baking.

Pancakes? mmmmm

Or Salad dressing?

Using it for fried chicken goujons is also good (although very far from healthy). if you drizzle the buttermilk into the flour mixture you get big crispy bumps.

My grandfather does, too!

There is a whole natural food movement that advocates soaking grains in things like buttermilk (as well as using other fermentation methods in food). Some people say it is too sour for their taste, but others love it and say there is no sourness, or if there is, it's eliminated when you add a sweetener and fruit.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

My grandma crumbles cornbread into buttermilk and eats it with a spoon like cereal.  :-X
