I've been in the UK for about 4 months, and I haven't picked up any accent.  I've picked up expressions and alternate words for things (ex. trunk/boot); however, the accent is not one of them.  Everyone I know has assured me my accent is absolutely not disappearing - I still sound as American as ever.   :D

Same.  I've been here 2.5 years and don't anticipate ever picking up an accent -- my accent didn't change moving around the US, either.  Although it is funny when I speak with friends back in the US and THEY express surprise that I still sound the same as ever.   :D

I've changed the words I use (even though I swore I wouldn't...half of it is just habit from hearing it so often and the other half is just being tired of people looking at me funny when I use a different word) but not the accent.  My southern drawl tends to lessen when I'm not in Virginia (it did the same when I moved around the US and when I lived in Italy) but definitely not picking up on the British accent.  For me, I'd have to make a conscious effort to try to sound British in order to adapt the accent...it's not something that would come naturally.  However, picking up on the slang and using different words is something I sometimes do without even realizing it.  This in essense makes me sound more British even though my accent is the same.

I don't think I have anything remotely resembling a Scottish accent. Though I was on the phone to the GP surgery the other day and BF swears I said "fine" to the receptionist with a Scottish accent.  I disagree, but it didn't stop him from chanting "One of us, one of us, one of us..." at me for a good 5 minutes.  ;D

One of my friends swore I said something "like an Invernessian" when I thought I'd said my normal way. She didn't chant at me though  ;)

My accent hasn't changed much in the 11 years I have lived in the UK (after the first 29 being in Texas), but apparently my inflection has changed.  Last time I saw one of my friends from uni (5 years ago) he laughed hysterically at my inflection, which I didn't think had changed, but obviously must have done.

Didn't think I developed much accent even after 20 years but wasn't until I'd been back in the US several years I realized I was saying "leisure" the British way (not "lee-sure")

Agreed.

You said you don't live in the UK.  If that's the case, then you're not "picking up the accent", you're consciously trying to have an accent.

Exactly. I spend hours every day on the phone with my Mancunian DF, and I find myself picking up his mannerisms, too. I haven't actually picked up the accent yet, but very much the inflections.

I've always had a very malleable accent; I tend to pick up anything I'm around enough. So I've a feeling once I get there, it won't be long. I hope I don't, though. I like that I sound different. :D
