Filing US Taxes
« on: March 15, 2011, 11:51:07 AM »
Sorry to be posting again but I was hoping someone could answer this.  Is this the correct 2555 form I should be filing? The form at the very top from 2010?

http://search.irs.gov/web/query.html?col=allirs&charset=utf-8&qp=&qs=-Wct%3A%22Internal+Revenue+Manual%22&qc=&qm=0&rf=0&oq=&qt=form+2555

Can I simply just print it, fill it in and mail it? Is there anything else I need to do?

Also, (sorry if this has already been asked) do I need to do anything for UK taxes? I work for the NHS and have heard that I don't need to do anything because they do it for me but before them (in 2010) I worked for a restaurant and am wondering if I should do anything to try to see if I get any money back?! I'm confused... ???

Yes that is the correct form - direct link http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f2555.pdf.

You'll need to send the IRS a complete tax return. Form 2555 is just one piece of that. While you can fill in all of the forms by hand, I recommend that you use online tax software which walks you through the process and fills the forms in for you. Here is a link to the list of software which is offered for free: http://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/jsp/index.jsp

For UK taxes, if you are employed, your employer normally deducts tax from your pay via Pay As You Earn (PAYE). This applies whether your employer is a public or private sector organisation. If you have no other source of income aside from your job, you would not normally have to do a tax return - but have a look at the following page which details situations when you might need to complete one: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/sa/need-tax-return.htm. If in any doubt you can ring the Self Assessment helpline on +44 161 931 9070 and they will give you a definitive answer. Hope this helps!
