H&R Block FreeFile?
« on: March 20, 2011, 01:13:56 PM »
Hi,
Having a nightmare doing my US taxes. I'm trying to use H&R Block's FreeFile program, but having some problems with it and not even sure if I'm able to use it.
So: got married in the US in 2009, have lived with my UKC husband in the UK since Aug 2009 and worked in the UK for all of 2010. I'm trying to file married, filing separately but FreeFile still wants spouse's info, including SSN, which he obviously does not have, and it won't let me progress without entering a legitimate SSN for him.
Has anyone else used this or a similar program to do their US taxes from the UK? I think I have a really straightforward tax situation - made $26,105.05 in the UK in 2010, no savings or anything else to file. So far I've tried to fill out forms 1040 and f2555EZ on my own, but having a really hard time for some reason haha. Also, is there a form to fill out for foreign tax payed in 2010??
Any advice from anyone who's already done this would be greatly appreciated!! I've really procrastinated on this and I could kick myself.

Thanks in advance!
Danielle

Can't answer the specific question since DW and I are both USC, but in general I can tell you that tax software varies widely in terms of how well it copes with expat issues.

My first suggestion would be that if you hit a wall with one tax program, just try another one from the IRS list of free tax software.

Also keep in mind that all the vendors who participate in Free File are required to offer free technical support. So you can always try phoning them for help getting their software to do what you need.
