Frozen OJ concentrate sub?
« on: March 20, 2011, 06:13:38 PM »
Hey All,

I've found a recipe for a copycat orange julius and being a pregnant woman of 19 weeks, I automatically had to have some.  The problem is that the recipe includes frozen  orange juice concentrate and I can't find any type of juice concentrate anywhere!

Does anyone know where I can find some or a substitute which would work just as well?

Thanks in advance!

i'd just buy some orange "squash" like this brand:

http://www.rocksorganic.com/index.asp?section=Products&ID=55

i might be wrong, but if a typical frozen OJ concentrate can says the directions to make juice are: 1 part concentrate to 3 parts water, and the squash that i pasted is 1 part water to 6 parts squash, that means the squash is twice is strong...

so if your recipe calls for, say,  100ml of the oj concentrate, i'd take 50ml of the squash, add 50ml of water to it, and freeze that, then follow the recipe.

i hope that made sense :)

i meant to say that the squash is 1 part squash to 6 parts water, but i'm sure you got the idea!

But frozen OJ is 100% juice when properly reconstituted.  That is mainly water and sugar.

it will likely function the same way. the grams of sugar are probably quite comparable.

I'm sure the amount of sugar might be the same.  It just won't really taste the same.  Squash is squash.  100% juice is just different.

The other issue, I suppose is that you use the OJ partially frozen.  I suppose you can freeze the squash, but I'm not sure if it would thaw in the same manner.

Take normal orange juice and reduce it slowly on the hob until it's a thick syrup. I suspect you'll need LOADS of juice, I'd probably add some sugar as well to get that right consistency.

Squash would not work for this. It's gonna be tough to replicate frozen oj concentrate but what cheesebiscuit suggests is probably your best bet.

Thanks everyone.  I thought about reducing orange juice but it sounds like way too much work for an orange julius!

When I saw this thread I was so hoping for a great substitute.  My family makes burbon slush with both frozen oj and lemonade.  I'm seriously concerned about my ability to live without it!

I've been looking for juice concentrate for years. With so many UK fridges/freezers being on the small side, it seems like the little tubes of concentrate would certainly make more sense to have over here.

A friend told me you used to be able to buy them in the southeast about 15 years ago, and then they ceased to exit here. Grrr.

I remember when I first moved here I went up and down the frozen food aisle, looking for frozen limeade.  I thought I was going nuts because I couldn't find it.  I need limeade for my frozen margaritas! I now make them on the rocks with fresh lime juice.  Yummy.  Might make some this weekend if the weather stays lovely! [smiley=drunk.gif]

You could always make your own with this recipe:

http://www.ehow.com/how_2122825_make-frozen-juice-concentrate.html

Seems like a real pain for a fairly simple little drink though.

I don't see why you couldn't just make your own recipe though.  It's basically orange juice (which you could make with fresh oranges), some milk and a little vanilla.  It would be fun to play around with different quantities and make your own UK friendly recipe.  You could add creamer, different amounts of ice...or even put in other flavourings.  I found a smoothie recipe a few months ago that was similar to OJ and had a small amount cinnamon in it...yummmmm.

I've always just mixed orange juice and vanilla ice cream.

Easy peasy.
