New Yorker moving to England via San Francisco
« on: March 22, 2011, 12:11:37 PM »
Hi all!

I'm Ian.  In a couple of months, I'll have Italian citizenship jure sanguinis.  As an EU national, I'll have the right to live and work in the UK.  I've been kind of an Anglophile for as long as I an remember.  I love dense city life.  I love two-wheeled transportation.  (I'm a scooterist.)  I love the global perspective even average people have over there, compared to how isolated and Amerocentric people get over here.  I love pub life, and it helps that I got to know many of the English students who were studying abroad at my uni.  They're some of my best friends now!

I work for an airline with generous flight benefits, so whenever I have a holiday I fly over for a visit.

It's only natural that I want to take the next step, and become an expat once it's practical.  This site has certainly helped with that, since it's hard to define the practicalities without learning from those who've done it before.

So, thanks everyone for sharing your experiences!

Welcome to UK Yankee, Ian! I split my time between England and the Bay Area as well.

As you say, the practicalities are legion, and this forum has of great help to me in being able to live in London.

Next year, probably in the first quarter.  I should have my IT passport by the end of this year, which coincides well with my lease expiring 31 Dec, though I could stay month-to-month if I'm not quite ready then.
