Baby Food/Formula on Long Haul Flights
« on: March 23, 2011, 07:36:18 AM »
DS eats around 800g of solids and drinks around 35oz of formula a day.  He also has finger foods and snacks.

The airline can't confirm if they will have jars of food on board  ::)  so I'm planning to bring jars of food.  Is this going to be an issue going through security?  I figure unopened, sealed jars of food would be more kosher than the homemade food he normally gets...but they aren't going to make me open all those jars and taste them are they?  Wouldn't that ruin them anyway (not being in fridge after)?

What's the best plan of action regarding formula?  I know I can preorder from Boots inside the airport but space is going to be a major issue so I thought bringing a separate container of powdered formula would be ideal.  Of course...walking through security with an unmarked container of white powdery substance... ???

Other than that, he can eat off my plate and I'll have snacks for him.

I asked about this on another forum but their travel experience consists of 2-4 hour flights so I figured you guys here could be more helpful with relevant info.  Surely they have to make some kind of allowances for people who are going to be on a 20+ hour trip.

You can bring anything...I just did US to Asia with food and cereal in an unmarked ziploc bag and it was not even looked at. I think having the baby makes it clear to security what you're bringing.

There is a biggish Boots at Terminal 2 at Manchester Airport. I flew out of MAN last month with tons of baby food, I had to taste it with my finger and close it back up, no big deal. I brought the Hipp Organic in plastic pots type thing, just make sure to bring babyfood you can close up again. You can just buy formula at the Boots, you shouldn't have to preorder it. Going through security is not really stressful at all, the security guards will help you as best they can and from my experiences of late, they won't rush you. My other suggestion would be to bring powdered formula and buy bottled water when you get through security.  I highly doubt that any airline would have baby food on the flight. Good luck!

racheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee (lol)...that helps a lot.  I'm flying out of T2 at MAN and was a little stressed after hearing some horror stories about security (not at that specific airport but in general).  I'm travelling alone with baby and 7-year-old (plus a gazillion things of luggage and bags and various other nonsense) so I was planning on doing the "I'm a helpless woman with all this junk" card so people won't be mean to me.   :-\\\\

I figured powdered formula would be the easiest (and most compact) option so that's what I was planning to go with.  I may just stick to homemade food if I've got to taste it anyway.

I'm hoping I don't have to check my luggage on the other side (JFK) as it seems to be really random and sometimes I do have to check it and sometimes not.  Also would make my life much easier if they don't make me take baby out of my soft carrier.

I would say take your time & not get bothered by impatient travellers behind you.  I've had to drink my DD formula before but switched to powder mixed with bottled water bought in the terminal.  Oh, I brought a ton of Organix/Hipp dry snacks with no problem--they're mostly looking for liquids (although that can included pureed dinners).  As for the flight having baby food...good luck.  We were promised baby food on two flights (ordered it through their online system) and, alas, when meal time arrived--no food for baby!!  Good thing I had something stashed in the carry-on.  ;)

As for your luggage, you always have to collect your luggage at the first point of entry into the US, despite a continuing flight (I know, it's such a pain).  I just grab a cart and, in a pinch, find a baggage handler to help me.  There's usually a few milling around when bags come through to help out.

Good luck & have a safe flight!
 :)

I just got back from the states and took formula with me in tetra packs. All you need to do is present it to security now. they don't make you taste it any more. As with the baby food, I would just get pre made stuff, but since there is no limit on snacks I can't see it being a problem.

Good luck.
