Is chili powder available there?

I'm talking about chili powder like you put in chili and taco spice, it's not spicy so much as flavorful...not hot at all. My husband swears he's never heard of it and he cooks more than I do. Can you buy it? It's the key to my taco spice mix!!! 

Yep! There is plenty of chilli powder, from mild to medium to hot.  It's with all the other spices.

You probably can get at any larger grocery store. The small ones never seem to carry it tho.

It may take a bit of time to find one with the heat level you are looking for, so be prepared for some adjustment period. I still import my chilli powder, both mixed and ground chilis from penzey's in the states because I know the levels and hubby is picky when it comes tip spicy food.

No, not that. NOT HOT. The bland stuff. Seriously, no heat, not sure how it's different. It's almost sweet.

Yes. Tesco carries mild and hot chili powder.  The mild is ummm, mild. 

Hmmm. I'm under the impression there is a difference between American chili powder and UK chili powder.

Your typical McCormick's chili powder is not just fine ground chilies, but a mix of that, cumin, and other spices. It's been a while now, but I don't remember finding that in the UK (and I can't look at the Tesco link either).

The UK stuff I bought was pure chili so I made my own 'chili powder'.

I do not like spicy food AT ALL.

This is the way to go....there isn't that much in it. Keeps well in a screw top jar. I do the same for creole and cajun as the stuff here inevitably has ginger in it.

I get what I get because I know the actual chili used is ancho or chipolte so I know the heat level. I haven't found one here that gives me that info, mild just says mild, medium medium and so on. Some are mixes, but also you get just the straight ground chilis. i think stuff sold at grocery stores is more likely to be mixes where as the ethnic.stores tend to be just chillis.

Tesco has ground chilis and chili powder.  The ground chilis is just chilli. The powder is the mix. 

I'm confused!  When we're talking about chilli powder "the mix" are we talking about the stuff that comes in the packets mixed with other stuff for making "chilli" the dish?  Or is it something else entirely that comes in the little spice bottles that I never knew existed?

That's what I thought as well.  But now I'm curious as to what bookgrl means with ground chillis vs. the mix?
