Moving to Cambridge
« on: April 02, 2011, 06:00:52 PM »
My husband and I are buying a house 5 miles from Cambridge.  Does anyone live in the Cambridge area?   I would love to meet up with fellow Americans.  We are moving from Bedfordshire and looking forward to the move.

Hi.  There are a few of us in the Cambridge area who meet up and ave dinner after work.  One of us just had a baby though, so she probably won't be joining us for a while.  :)

Ummm, I might not be the best person to ask.  ;)

I think Cambridge has a lot of potential and I think the fact that the University (or individual colleges) owns almost all the land and rental properties in the city means that things get done that benefit students and staff and not residents.  If you know what I mean.

This guy hates Cambridge. And if you like bad restaurant reviews.....

I do really like The Chop House and they do puddings quite well.

I think it really depends on what you like in a city. I'm super happy here. I personally prefer some of the stuff like lectures over clubbing, and I live in a nice little area with good amenities.

I only lived in Cambridge last year from July to November (well, and spent various 3 month bouts for a few summers in a row earlier in the 2000's) but I just wanted to pipe in and say congrats :-) there is a lot to love about Cambridge! And if I could move back there, in a heartbeat I would!

I'd love to go to lectures, but they are all either in the afternoon when I am at work or closed to only University students/employees.

Sounds just right for us. :)

There are some good non-University affiliated things like the recent ThinkCon and the monthly Skeptics in the Pub (and Skeptic Cafe) which are some good evening and weekend options.

Seriously though, if you like things like chamber music, or string quartets, or gypsy/flamenco/manouche, or any sort of small brass thingies, there are always events - an embarrassment of riches really.

The is also (or was?) a cool busker festival, which featured among many other great pavement artists this guy.....who I think is just the best ever:
