Who on earth throws out running shoes every 6 months if they're not an athelete? Dang!

They've got their advice wrong - running shoes definitely have an expiry, but it's based on the number of miles they've done, NOT time!

I'm a runner and I can clock up the allotted 300ish miles in a year to 18 months, but you can usually tell they're worn out by that point, anyway. And runners doing serious mileage always have a few pairs to rotate between so even theirs last longer than this stupid 6 months business!

And who throws out perfume? I've got a bottle that's 10+ years old and it's still absolutely fine! I wouldn't even have considered throwing it away... Who are these people??

So really this article should tell you to use common sense and only throw stuff away when it's worn, err, right?
Summer 97 - first visited friends in London
99-00 - studied at Uni of Sussex on exchange
Feb 02 - moved to London on BUNAC
Sep 02 - WP granted (IT skills shortage list)
Sep 04 - WP renewed
Sep 06 - WP renewed again (screwed by 4-5 year ILR change)
Sep 07 - ILR!
March 09 - Citizenship!
July 09 - bone marrow transplant :(
18 Sep 10 - wedding!
Mar 12 - half marathon in Paris! 1:47:12!
Oct 12 - Amsterdam FULL marathon! 3:48:23!

I think so much stuff like that falls into the category of using common sense. For food or household/beauty consumables - if it's still working and smells/looks fine then you're probably good to go. Obviously I'm just a little cavalier about it and if I were pregnant or immunosuppressed for some reason I would care more.

I would make an exception for safety items like car seats or cycle helmets, etc though. For that kind of thing... follow the manufacturer's instructions.

I don't really toss anything unless it's absolutely falling apart or completely empty.  As far as I'm concerned, if it's not food, it's good until it's gone.  :-[

I even go so far as to save mostly empty containers of liquid hand soap, where the level is so low the pump can't get to it.  I then combine the little bit of leftover from each one into one bottle.  I do the same with moisturizer.  :P  I'm a bit of a nut about waste!

I'm like this with dish soap and liquid laundry detergent.  When it's just about empty, I put a little warm water in the container and shake.  I'll get another load of wash out it and several more times of washing dishes!  Same with shampoo / conditioner.

All of these little money saving articles sort of drive me nuts.  The secret to saving money is to not spend it.

I can be an excellent saver when I want to.  I did save $60k in 2.5 years while living in NYC and I didn’t make huge amounts of money, and my parents didn’t help.  My friends here were shocked and couldn’t understand how I was surviving on so little.  I just wanted to shake them, I had a cheap ghetto apartment and a roommate, I didn’t go out to eat 7 days a week and I didn’t by new clothes all the time.  Not always fun or easy, but it clearly worked.

I couldn't agree more. It is like when people ask how I lost weight...no secret, ate less and exercised more. Don't misunderstand, I know it isn't easy to save or lose weight-- I struggle with both hugely, probably more with saving than anything. I just think we all know what we need to do, we just aren't always in a place where we are ready to do it.

Cosmopolitan is not going to tell women that they smell fine without cologne and they look good without mascara and nail polish.

I don't get this article.   ???  I should be rich-   :P I am using stuff well above and beyond anything stated in this article (if I use the product at all)!
