Vinyl Lovers

Anyone around here collect vinyl? Its something my partner and I have done on and off for a few years but really getting into it in the last few months since we upgraded our record player..

Yesterday was Record Store Day (its like Christmas in April for people like us!) and managed to grab the foo fighters (covers) album, Joy Division/New Order 12" split, Warpaint, Beastie Boys, Michael Jackson, RUSH, The Clash and Ramones/RHCP all on 7". Disappointed I couldnt get my hands on the Radiohead singles or the Ryan Adams ep.. But we arrived at the store late, so next year may get there a bit earlier..

Its becoming an expensive hobby but enjoyable. I love the sound of it and try to buy most things in its format. I also love it when labels/artists provide links for a free mp3 copy of said album...

Oh my fave snag so far? UK copy of Pulps last album - We Love Life. Bought at Spin Dizzy records in Dublin for €8 and seen on eBay for much, much more now (though that might be down to the reunion and a new demand)

My wishlist:
Ryan Adams back catalogue
Liz Phairs Exile in Guyville
Beatles

Ah yes, Pulps tour, should be called "Help the Aged" (get it...) I love Pulp...anywho...There is a brilliant article in the Guardian this week where Bob Stanley & Pete Paphides travel around Britain going to record stores. I love Vinyl, but haven't got any here in the UK...I do love its unique sound and the feel of it. We haven't got room for a record player unfortnuately.

We collect Vinyl, we popped into Rough Trade East today and I picked up Cloud Nothing's Didn't You Limited Pressing on 7" with a handstamped sleeve.

I have several albums from Ryan Adam's back catalog, what are you looking for in-particular?

I'm looking for the first Travis Album if you ever see it, as it was very limited. I've recently got an original pressing of Mazzy Star's So Tonight that I might see which was something I've been looking for, for YEARS.

We used to collect loads, but stopped for 3-4 years due to lack of funds and are just starting up again :)

I've got myself a little collection back in the US, but I haven't bought anything in years because I've been too broke!  :P  I mostly collect punk records, old and new.  A lot of current DIY punk bands almost exclusively put their music out on vinyl so you pretty much have to build a collection whether you were looking to or not!  :)

My favorite band is this little band from NJ, that broke up in 1994.  There is one rare record of theirs that I almost got my little mitts on, on ebay, for super cheap but someone out bid me in the last second when I went to answer the door for the UPS guy! Heartbroken!!  Every other listing that I've seen pop up is for like $80-$100 when I could have had it for $20!

I've never had the funds to really get on the hunt for other rare stuff I want, but I've got friends who are absolutely obsessed to the point where they actually opened up a record shop and label, partly because they knew it would better their chances of coming across stuff they want! ;D They've been taking on some pretty great collections, mostly punk, hardcore, jazz and soul.  Plus I get free copies of all the stuff they put out on the label!  :)

I haven't even thought about Ryan Adams in so long. Summer of 69 brings back so many memories....

I'm sure that was funny in your own head.   ;)

I'm still giggling.....

I'm a big Whiskeytown fan, but I haven't listened to much of his subsequent stuff...

I have some great stuff from the 80s including a lot of Japan and 4AD stuff. Probably not worth much though. No record player now however. One day I'd love to have my ideal 80s collection on vinyl but I'm happy to buy new stuff on CD or as an MP3 unless it was specifically recorded for vinyl.

Any reliable place to check value of vinyl? This is a 'down the road' dream to collect but I can research in the meantime!

Just anything to get me started. Mainly Gold or Destroyer... I know he recently re-issued them on PAX-AM but he threw a temper tantrum and stopped it..

Im also looking for Kraftwerk, Nirvana and more.. Ive somehow - without thinking - amassed most of Echo & the Bunnymens back catalogue... It be nice to get most of my fave cds on lp...Also a lot of Psychedelic Furs..

Im annoyed because a lot of the stuff from my teens would have been first issued on vinyl then cd/tape and never picked them up because we didnt have a record player. I was looking at some Elastica singles and what I have on CD is now worth almost £15 on LP.. :cry

Edit:

This arrived in the post today.. this is seriously my most favourite song of all time...

Oooh me, I collect vinyl. I love it! I have a great collection at my parents house, slowly building up my UK collection.  My main obsession is Beatles albums, 45s, EPs, etc!

My Mom brought all her Beatles albums over from the UK when she married my Dad. When I was about 5 or 6 he put them all on tape and threw out the LPs.

His excuse - 'Tapes are the way of the future'

My mother was not very happy - I think her exact words were 'You've threw the kids college money out the window!' (I dont think they were worth THAT much, but that wasn't the point)

Needless to say, they're no longer married [smiley=laugh4.gif]

I have Gold, Love is hell I/II and the creme de la creme Heartbreaker! :) There used to be a couple of great record stores in Brighton, but one closed down and the other never has anything good :(

We have a lot of Kraftwerk as well, the boy is a huge fan, me not so much so I have no idea what we have on that score.

Nirvana we have everything or close to everything I believe if you combine our collections :) I do have all the Smashing pumpkins albums and various singles, EPs etc.

I'm not a collector for the sake of collecting though, and I'm not trying to amass any album I've liked over my lifetime, I actually tend to pick up a lot of new stuff on vinyl, I browse and try stuff out, take recommendations from the guys at rough trade E (it's about 2 minutes from my work) whatever :) I'll pick up pretty much anything I think is interesting. Some things have worked out really well, others less so but it's all good :)
It's just a way for me to connect with music more closely.

I just re-discovered Discogs - which allows you to catalogue everything and gives you a value of what you thats recently sold on their site (they say my collection is only worth about £300) Ive purchased a few things from there and prices - for at least a buyer - were cheaper (well more competitively priced) and much better selection than eBay.

Just purchased this (have it on CD) after seeing Hit So Hard: the Rise & Fall of Patty Schemel

Im a collector in the same way I collected my cds - I just want the music I like. Im not bothered if it impresses anyone.. It be nice to get like for like, but that would be a huge undertaking.. I prefer the sound and feel of vinyl.. its much richer. CD is perfect, but now we have MP3s we can have something proper like records and then portable/easy access.
