Does anybody else notice that there is a serious lacking in the sign post department here?  I think part of my problem is that when I come to a corner and I'm looking to find what street I am on I can't find the stupid sign post. I know a lot of times it's just tacked to a building- but even then it's few and far between.
We stole countries with the cunning use of flags. Just sail around the world and stick a flag in. "I claim India for Britain!" They're going "You can't claim us, we live here! Five hundred million of us!" "Do you have a flag …? "What? We don't need a flag, this is our home, you bastards" "No flag, No Country, You can't have one! Those are the rules... that I just made up!...and I'm backing it up with this gun, that was lent to me from the National Rifle Association."

Part of the problem with street names (at least where we were) is you get a whole bunch of streets in an area with the same "name" but different designations (like road, close, lane etc.)

We have that nearby. We have Kingsbridge Wharf, Kingsbridge Street, Kingsbridge Close etc. I've seen that done in other areas of town too. I'm not sure why the need for so many similar, other than to save on thinking of other street names.

I KNOW. I dread driving at night because when there ARE (teeny tiny and two) signs none of them are reflective. I can get lost on a straight line on a good day, so this DOES NOT HELP.

That said, because I walk to and from work and all around the city centre, I give directions a LOT. Especially to parents' searching for their kids' flats!

I've lived in Worthing for 4 years now and I think it know it pretty well. It's very small and compact so I know the central part well, not as sure about the outskirts.

I find it funny when I ask people if their parents/family members live locally or close by. I had someone answer - Oh no, no my parents don't live locally, they live in Findon. Well, Findon is a part of Worthing! It's in the Northern outskirts of Worthing. It makes me laugh so much, the different perceptions of long distance here.

I get a good giggle over that one too. When people mention having to go 'all the way to____' (fill in the blank with any town 10 miles or less away) and the inconvenience of it because it is so far away. I can understand to a point because we don't have a car here, but even drivers seem to think it is a long way. Any time I have mentioned driving 3 1/2 hours for a concert then driving home the same night, people are shocked. They seem to think that surely a person would stay over for the night. I've completely quit mentioning the fact we'd occasionally drive 50 miles for a steak dinner at a beloved restaurant we didn't have locally, without shopping or some form of entertainment in that town. The two or three times it came up in conversation I feared someone would cart me off to the looney bin.  [smiley=dizzy2.gif]

I've even tried explaining I think differently of distance because England is roughly the size of Indiana, and that is only one state of the whole country.

Also agreed. The tax building in Birmingham hides in plain site. I spent five minutes staring at the building, not knowing that I was looking at it!!!

I have "please ask me for anything" face so I get asked for directions a LOT -- mostly by British people! I also have a map around with me in my bag, so I can always help.
