Can multiple pets fly together in one crate?
« on: April 22, 2011, 09:50:09 PM »
Hi,
I will be transporting 3 cats to Manchester in December. Can anyone tell me if they can all travel together in a large crate big enough for all three? I'm thinking they would be less afraid and stressed that way....

Thanks

I believe the only pets that are allowed to fly together in a crate are < 6mo puppies/kittens. Obviously they wouldn't qualify for the PETS scheme, which means one crate per animal.

I guess I didn't read that in the scheme information. Thanks anyway :)

It's not the Customs rules you should look at, but the air carrier you plan on using.  I've worked for several US-based major carriers, and they all require an individual crate for each animal with exceptions for litters of tiny kittens/puppies/chicks/etc.

There are also specific requirements for the size and construction of the crate.  Such as, they have to have a solid floor and be large enough for the animal to completely turn around.  Don't just guess that the crate you usually take him/her to the vet in will be acceptable, it'll immensely help your stress levels on the day if you read as much as you can and prepare well before the actual moving process begins.

I had originally wanted to put mine in the same crate, but it's not possible. Then, I picked them up at Gatwick and one cat had peed in the crate. At that point I was glad they weren't in the same crate as I would have had to deal with two pee-soaked cats instead of just one!  :P
