My mom ran into this problem too when she was trying to book a flight to see me in July. My baby's due the last week in July and she really wanted to come see me that week, but because of the insane prices had to push her visit forward by a week. She said that the prices dropped by a good £500 once you hit August.

Just wondering what is considered a 'good' price these days?  (Not in July, but just generally)

I am looking to book roundtrip tickets for a general time frame end of Sept to early/mid-October, not sure on dates yet.  Looking at either Manchester to NYC, Manchester to the Baltimore/Washington area, or out from Leeds-Bradford to either NYC or Baltimore/Washington area.  I am finding flights in the range of £450-600 apiece, is that about right?

I know people sometimes say we'd get a cheaper deal flying out of London, but I generally find that to be a false economy.  Once we add on our train (or otherwise) travel down there, maybe overnight in a hotel if needed, there's nothing in it or it may end up even more expensive.

ETA:  I've not been back since May 2009, so no idea what the going rate is these days!  Before that, I used to book 2- or 3-destination (multi-destination) trips to the US for about £1200 for the both of us all-in.

This is as good as you are likely to get.  These are pretty normal prices.

Agreed.  I got tickets about a week ago from London to Chicago in September for £451.  A few weeks ago, they were more than £600, and now they're £463.  I think if you can get round-trip from anywhere in the UK to anywhere in the US for less than £500, you've got a good deal.

Agreed! Our miles plus money fare on VA for November flying into Orlando and out of LAX was £467 each - I think I got a good deal, the same flights for October were £800!! They definitely seem to have gone up this year  ::)
