nobody's saying "we shouldn't have killed him because of the risk of attacks".  They're recognizing the political reality involved.

Completely agree with you. The people that died are still dead. And I don't think killing someone even someone evil and horrible "rights a wrong" as another poster has said.

I agree too. People are confusing vengeance with justice.

That being said, I am proud of the Navy SEALS for a job well done.

I have to say I have mixed feelings. I wasn't celebrating in the streets, (and I have to admit that turned me off a bit)- but I'm glad it's a chapter closed for a lot of people. I hadn't even thought about OBL for such a long time, it was a shock to learn we had found him and killed him. I do hope that this doesn't spur more violence, but there is the old adage "violence begets violence"   :-[

However- It did make me swell a bit with pride knowing it was our boys that got him. Though we probably the only ones still looking for him!
We stole countries with the cunning use of flags. Just sail around the world and stick a flag in. "I claim India for Britain!" They're going "You can't claim us, we live here! Five hundred million of us!" "Do you have a flag …? "What? We don't need a flag, this is our home, you bastards" "No flag, No Country, You can't have one! Those are the rules... that I just made up!...and I'm backing it up with this gun, that was lent to me from the National Rifle Association."

I can't say that I am glad that he's dead, but I can't say that I am sad.  I wish that people didn't do the fist pumping and "U S A!" shouting, but I actually understand it more in this situation than when people seemed full of glee when Saddam (or someone like Arafat) died.  I don't think this is horrible news or that people will hate us more because of it.  Obama said he was going to do this when he was elected, so it shouldn't be surprising that this was a priority.  I sort of wish it could have been done without anyone else dying though.

I don't have anywhere else to put this and I need to vent it.  I'm trying my best to not comment on it.  I think I'll just have to delete him.

From a status update on a "friend's" facebook: "I wonder if after hearing that Hitler was dead and the war was over, the jews that had managed to survive and be freed from the camps thought about containing what little excitement and jubilation they were able to muster up. I will not feel guilty for being elated that after nearly 10 years, justice has been done."

Ugh.  ::)  :-X  >:(

It's all I can do to not say anything to this guy.  He can have his relief and happiness, and I won't, and can't, discount what happened to us on 9/11.  But our situation and the government sanctioned, systematic persecution and extermination of a population of millions is hardly the same thing.

Can we go back to exhaustive annoying coverage of the Royal Wedding now please?!  :-\\\\

Don't comment. It'll only make you angrier! The best thing is to either ignore or block the person.

A friend of mine on FB posted this, which I think sums it up for me:

‎"I will mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that."

I've blocked him for the time being.  I know this is a subject that is very sensitive for him, and everyone really, so I'm just going to ignore this subject for a while until everyone gets it out of their system.  :)

As for that quote Chary, here is a link to the full sermon.  It's pretty wonderful.  :)

It's a good quote, but apparently it's fake:

Hah! Well, it wouldn't be the first time the internet has spawned something untrue!  :)

But at least part of the quote appears to be real. According to NoseOverTail's link above, it appeared in a sermon delivered at the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, Christmas, 1957:

"Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction."

It's a nice quote, but like sonofasailor says, it looks like it's a fake.

I did a search for "mourn", "precious", and "rejoice", and none of the three appear in Nose Over Tail's link, or in this one, which says the sermon was delivered in November 1957, not at Christmas.

But at least part of the quote appears to be real. According to NoseOverTail's link above, it appeared in a sermon delivered at the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, Christmas, 1957:

Strangely, that quote appears in the version in NOT's link, but not in the one I found at MLK Online.

Will the internet ever tell the truth?!?!  :D

The MLK online one might be more accurate.  I googled something like "love our enemies martin luther king".

ETA: Or maybe he made the MLK online one, in November like it says and made the other as a modified version at Christmas? They're pretty different!

Well my father isn't really a sailor...at least according to mum...

But I am examining why I got a small smug jolt from posting that....

I know it's way off topic (and geeky), but Megan McArdle updated her post above to explain how a real MLK quote got mixed up with the sentiments of a teacher who posted on Facebook.  She also linked to another article about how to use Google's custom date feature to search for things like this to help determine if they're real:
