Wye Valley/Herefordshire/Malvern Hills
« on: May 03, 2011, 01:32:52 AM »
Any advice about what to do in Herefordshire/Wye Valley, aside from drinking lots and lots of cider? We'll be staying near Ross-on-Wye for a few days this summer with kids, and welcome any suggestions.

My 8-year-old is totally into history and castles and All Things English, and we're all into places that are way off the beaten track. Thanks for any tips!

Hi, a drive From Ross on Wye toward Monmouth ( Henry V birth place) along the Wye valley to Chepstow, is one of the best things to do, castles,&  history everywhere, Goodrich Castle, Chepstow Castle, even whats left of Monmouth Castle is worth a look,
Stop at Tintern for the Abbey, all very good i know i live in Forest of Dean, also well worth visiting.Enjoy

It looks like you obviously know about the Malvern Hills. :P On a clear day they're really fun. There are plenty of car parks to choose from so even if you're not up for walking much, you can park quite close to the top. The views are extraordinary and the Worcestershire Beacon on the top peak shows a map that names the regions you can see in all directions, spanning parts of 13 counties and even as far as the Welsh mountains.

Another good place to go is Hereford Cathedral. I think Hereford's a nice city to walk in anyway, and the cathedral has loads of history. It houses the largest surviving Chained Library with books from the 8th to 19th century. It also has the Mappa Mundi on display, the largest medieval map in existence.
