One Way Ticket? Movers? Extra Baggage? Airlines?
« on: May 05, 2011, 12:16:56 PM »
Hello all...

So, how shall I move to England, from NYC? I am SO very confused.

One way tickets cost more than round trip? Really?

Some airlines have better deals than others on extra baggage? Any info on airlines would be great!

Mail stuff? Or hire movers? Know any good movers?

Some movers use ships and others fly it over? Which is better?

THANK YOU!

(I am so HAPPY to have these "problems" with moving... Because it means my visa was approved, and I can finally be with my husband. GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE APPLYING!!!!)

Married 04/13/11, in NYC.
Applied for Spouse Visa the following week, with express service, and I was approved 4 days later!
Arrived in the UK 05/20/11.
I took the stupid LIUK Test Oct. 2012.
We were granted ILR In Person in Croydon on 04/23/13.
Got BRP 2 days later, in mail box - it just appeared.

It all depends on how much stuff

One way tickets cost more than round trip? Really?
Buy a round trip - just dont use the 2nd half - a lot of us did this

Some airlines have better deals than others on extra baggage? Any info on airlines would be great! this is something to look at, if you dont have much stuff it might be cheaper and for sure faster to pay the extra luggage fee

Mail stuff? Or hire movers? Know any good movers? see above - I shipped 10 boxes via upakweship and didnt have any problems http://www.upakweship.com/index.php

Some movers use ships and others fly it over? Which is better? it comes down to cost and how much stuff - mine took 5-6 weeks but I sent the stuff early so it wasnt long after I arrived that my stuff arrived.

Good luck and congrats!

If you're in NYC consider the Queen Mary. A one way transatlantic crossing (7 nights) can cost as little as $599 (in May and June) and you get to take a whole load of stuff with you. If you look at it as having a holiday at the same time (food and lodging) it's not a bad deal.
The only problem might be getting from Southampton to wherever with a load of baggage. But not insurmountable. [And be sure to get the anti-sick jabs :P]
ETA: when I went back to check the fare, they were fully booked at that price  ::)

I never fully understood this either. Something interesting though, that's not well publicized - in the past this hasn't applied to student fares, which are available via specialist agencies like STA. These are able to be split, so a one-way fare costs exactly half of a round-trip. I discovered this back in 2004 when I came over on a 1-way ticket from Omaha for $220.

I had a discussion with the agent about why this was, and it had something to do with airlines trying to balance volume with normal fares, but student fares being leftover seats that they were just looking to fill.

Note that this was seven years ago! Still, it's worth looking into if you (or anyone reading this thread) qualify for student fares.

Thank you both for responding.

I am not under 26, so STA won't work, and I cannot spend a week on a boat, although I think that is a great idea!

We have had a headache with hubby packing and planning on shipping stuff - he has loads of muscial equipment that weighs a fair bit. He has decided it will cost less to sell a lot of it and buy again over here  :(

The rest of his stuff he is fitting in 2 extra suitcases and paying for excess baggage - I think it's $70 a case with Continental...and bringing a guitar as his carry on personal item. We just can't afford some of the massive shipping costs quoted... :o

i recently just did a one way fare for a resonable cost. I flew on aer lingus, through dublin, and bought a 0 dollar fare on aer lingus from DUB to london. all in all it cost me about 500, 600 after bags.

i was warned that if you do buy the round trip and dont use the other return segment, the airlines might have a fee for that. Be sure to read alllll of the fine print.

If one is entering on a visa for the first time, it is NOT a good idea to fly Aer Lingus through Dublin (or through Dublin at all). The visa will not be stamped when entering the UK and it could cause problems down the line. Better to suck it up and spend the extra money the first time. After that, flying through Dublin is fine. Flying via continental Europe is perfectly fine, btw, since they are considered international flights and passengers do go through immigration in the UK.

I don't  think that this is true.  One my RTW I habitually abandoned the return part of a flight.  It worked out cheaper to buy a rt ticket and I wasn't going back, but forward.  I was never charged.  What does happen though is if you book a flight with a stop, say BWI - JFK - LHR, and end up going to NYC for unknown reasons before hand and skipping the BWI - JFK leg of the trip, the flight from JFK - LHR would be canceled.

I wasn't expecting this either... but the reason for that is that they don't offer the cheaper, non-refundable option (where you can't cancel or change your flight unless you pay a fee) for one-way flights, which I think is unfair. It ended up being useful for me though, since I had booked my flight before I received my visa (I hadn't been planning to, but the UKBA had listed travel itineraries along with the other documents needed) and I ended up having to postpone my flight since I hadn't received my visa by the day I had originally booked my flight for.

That is the route we ended up doing, as we needed to save all the money we could. every other flight was 2 times as more. Do i need to speak to someone to get the proper stamp now?

Save your boarding pass. ticket stub and everything else proving you entered on the actual date...When it comes to the next visa step they will need to know what day you entered and since you dont have a stamp to prove it all that paperwork will suddenly become VERY important.
