Found: Iced Tea The Good, the Bad and the Meh
« on: May 27, 2011, 08:45:41 PM »
None are fresh brewed of course.  All use black tea concentrate.

The Good: Pret has peach iced tea in bottles.  It has just a little sugar and peach juice, only 15 calories per 100 ml.  It reminds me of Honest Tea Peach Oo-La-Long.

The Bad: Costa has iced tea. Terrible.  I can't even being to describe it. It was like drinking sugar water that had been coloured brown and had a splash of that fake watermelon flavour that Now and Laters had.  Bad.

The Meh: AMT.  It is cold and too sweet but not as sweet as Costa and does not have a horrible after taste.

Waitrose carries Nestea. i've never had it though, so I can't comment on it's taste.

I have given up on brewed real iced tea anywhere which is weird since obviously this country brews tons of tea!

I started boiling the kettle, throwing 1 tea bag in a pot, filling it with the water and walking away.  I go back when its "brown" and toss the tea bag and wait for it to cool.

I don't like sugar or lemon so I have never been a fan of bottled iced tea but I have yet moved on.

In London Rain Forest Cafe does proper brewed iced tea but they also charge per glass like 3 quid or something.  Needless to say I spent a little bit on iced tea.

When I make it at home, I fill a coffee mug with hot water and one tea bag and leave it on the counter while I am having my morning coffee. Then I pour it into my tea mug (32 oz mug), refill the coffee mug with cool water and swish it a bit to get more tea from the bag, and pour that into my tea mug, then fill the rest of the way with ice and cold water. As soon as I do, I put another tea bag into the coffee mug and refill with hot water to start the next one.

I like my iced tea without sugar or sweetener, so I don't worry about drinking it all day after my morning coffee. In the summer I love making peppermint tea, or a fruity blueberry, raspberry.. etc.. iced tea.

I've never found an instant or bottled tea I like, even in the States. I rarely bought it out because it was either weak, too strong, too sugary or tasted like they hadn't washed and aired the urn properly. Subway's Fuze tea (unsweetened) is pretty good. I used to drink the heck out of it when I managed a Subway.

Well, I'm in the US now but I'm still fussy about iced tea. If we don't have a pitcher in the fridge and want some quickly, we take one bag of strong tea (i.e. a British tea bag) and put it in a large glass mug (like the kind you'd drink root beer in). Fill it about 1/3 full with boiling water and let it steep for 5-10 minutes. You'll have to experiment with how strong you want it. Then take the bag out, fill the mug with ice (I mean fill it!) and top off with cold water.

This summer we're going to play with some lighter versions and some herbal stuff. We got a pineapple sage I'm dying to try in tea.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I make a ton of sun tea, and use a sugar syrup for sweetner if I want sugar in it (boil up a cup of sugar with a cup of water) I like herbal mixed with black tea, I have seen black tea in lots of shops these days.

Crytal Light Iced Tea is my favorite though...I have a small stash of this for a rainy day!

I love homemade iced tea, but sometimes when I am out and about I wanted something other than soda or water.  ;)

I use the flavoured tea bags from Whittard.  Of course, since my husband doesn't drink it he usually protests at how much room it takes up in the fridge.  However, seeing as he is still asleep I think I need to make some right now!

Being from Alabama, where sweet tea is the house wine of the south as they say in Steel Magnolias, I am somewhat of a fanatic about my iced tea!  And the sweeter the better.  I've found that none of the teas here are as good as Luzianne, which I have sent over in the family size boxes or stock up on when I'm back over.  It's always been branded as specially blended for iced tea, so it works really well.  As for any type of black tea concentrate, I'd rather go without than drink that swill.  No offense to anyone who likes it, but there's nothing like a freshly brewed glass!

Exactly. I've never tried the concentrate, but have decided I'd rather not. I've never liked instant for the bitter taste.

My brother loves his iced tea 'the sweeter the better', and I used to drink mine sweet, but have weaned myself off the sugar.
