Wanna swap ?
« on: June 01, 2011, 06:34:22 AM »
Hi..l'm an expat Brit (USC) living in TN,it might as well be living on the moon because l can't get any UK products here, except for a small selection of biscuits, sweets, and pickled onions from Publix that cost an arm and a leg !

Just wondered if anybody would be interested in swapping "food parcels" ? There's so many things that l miss from back home, and l'm sure it's the same for a lot of you guys.

No money needs to change hands, you just tell me what you want, say to the value of $50 or so,and l'll get it and post it and you do the same for me. I did it with somebody on this forum once before but don't recall who it was,it was a long time ago.

Anyway,if anybody's interested, just pm me. There's no catch,no hidden agenda, not trying to stiff anybody..all l want is a few things from back home that l can't get here,or can get if l take out a 2nd mortgage and order from one of the many online brit supermarkets !!  I'll send first..just tell me what u want. Anyone interested ?

We did a UKY food swap about five (?) years ago! I wonder if you could get enough people interested again to get it going?

I'd do it!  Just remember postage is crazy though!

What a lovely idea! Too bad I don't crave/desire enough things that I can't get here to make it worth the postage.  But hopefully you will some responses and get it going! Nothing worse than craving something from home and not being able to get it!

Unfortunately, the things I really want from the UK won't ship: cumberland sausages, bacon, M&S stuff, cheeses. I can source some of it over here but it's a pain.

Flbrit59, have you looked at online retailers, including Amazon, for the things you miss?

We used to ship stuff via internal mail when I worked at a multinational company!

Thanks for your replies. Like Balmerhon...the things that l really, really,REALLY want,l can't get, such as bacon and sausage and burgers, but l'll settle for other things that l miss too, that just cost so much to from any of the online stores. I have looked into Amazon and they do have some items that l'd like, but l haven't calculated any costs. So, again,if anybody is up for a swap..let's do it :)

You and l did a swap ? I know l did it with somebody but don't recall who,it was a long time ago ! I'm not really looking for a group of people, that would be too expensive for me..just 1 or 2 would be great :)

No, sorry! I'm not being clear!  :P. There was a UKY swap - we all paired off and sent care packages across the Atlantic. Here's the link to it, from way back in 2005: http://talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?topic=9838.0

Thanks very much. I checked out their FB page and it said they don't ship frozen stuff, which is what l'm mainly looking for from over this side. As l can't get British sausages and bacon, l have to settle for what l can get on some of the Brit supermarket sites, which is usually Irish sausages and bacon. When it comes to sausages,I find that the stuff made over here to a so called  "British receipe" is absolute rubbish and tastes nothing whatsoever like a british banger, the taste and texture are completely wrong and it makes you wonder if theese people have ever actually tasted a british sausage !

The main drawback as well,is just the huge cost of the items and shipping and packaging just costs a small fortune too. It just really isn't worth it in the end :(

Have you contemplated making your own? My British mother lived in the US for a long time and was never able to find sausages to satisfy her UK tastebuds, so she always made her own.
