i guys!

By the end of this month, my BF and I will be leaving the UK to go to the States to get married and apply for Spousal Visa.

We would like to see if anyone knows of a cheap accomodation, hotel/motel in the New York City

OR

New Jersey area, close to city transportation.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

thanks :)

I, too, am curious to see recs!

Hubby & I are going to the city for the first time - first time for both of us, later this year.

But I think we want something kind of nice (centrally located for us for the touristy tour things!) that doesn't cost the moon, which I'm finding out that NYC hotels do - seemingly even more than London.  (How is that even possible?!)  Geesh.

online_girl...where are you from? I know you are getting married in NYC and then filing with priority service for your spousal visa.  Where will you have this mailed too? As we always advise not to book air travel to the UK till you check your visa for problems.  Also remember to book air travel in maiden name since you visa will be in maiden name as I am assuming you will not wait around to change your US passport before filing?

sorry for hi-jacking just got me thinking

Hi Chilly!  Thanks for your response.

I am originally from New Jersey but currently in London with my BF right now.  I am spending the full 6 months of time on my Visitors Visa with him at his flat.

We are flying out at the end of the month to the States together on the same flight.  I am planning to get married at City Hall in New York City even though I am from New Jersey.  We already have a flight booking for the end of the month together.

I actually was going to ask in the Visa section of this messageboard what address I am supposed to send my Spousal Visa application and Priority Service!

Wh  will the application say where to send it?  I assume it will be the United Kingdom Consulate?

What she is saying is not to book your return flight back to the UK until after you receive the visa and check it for errors.  You don't know how long it will take for the visa to be issued, so don't book a flight out of the US until you have the visa in hand.

Where will you be staying while you wait for your visa to be issued?

We stayed at the Belvedere Hotel just off Times Square when we were last in NY (2009) I didnt want to stay anywhere basic, as we were staying at my Dads on Long Island, so went for something with a bit of pampering. King size beds, over stuffed duvets & pillows. Couldnt complain on the price (similiar to Hiltons in the area) but not the price of the W in Times Square...

Also try priceline for booking a hotel last minute. Ive always had decent success (usually getting business suites at regular room prices)

Ah yes!  right!

Nope, I have not booked my flight back to the UK.

I have only booked my return flight back to the USA, while he has booked a two week stay in the USA with me to marry and spend some time afterwords before returning.

Thanks for clarifying..

Checking: Aam I sending my Spousal Visa application to the British Consulate?

I ended up in a bad situation when I was last in NYC and managed to get a room in this hotel within an hour and at a very reasonable price (we were both uni students at the time so we needed cheap - I don't know if we got a discount for a last-minute booking). Our room was tiny, but the bed was comfy, the AC worked great and everything was clean. Pretty good location, too - just one block from the Empire State Building. It's nothing amazing, but it was good for a few nights in the city. I'd definitely consider going back if I'm ever in NYC again.

rec for a hotel - friends from the UK and I stayed at the Sheraton, there were two right across the street from each other and they were reasonably priced. one had a pool while the other allowed for use of that pool. very comfy beds, and apparently comfy floors too as one of my friends slept on it after a late night! haha (don't ask) and we were just blocks from times square, could actually see it from our hotel stepping out, and also even closer to central park. we took the subway to the statue of liberty and that didn't take long at all either ! albeit it was early in the morning, but just the same. :)

Yes, there is only one consulate that processes visas in the US now: the NY consulate. The address to mail it to will be given to you when you apply for the visa (you can also find it on the Worldbridge website as well).

I think what people are trying to get at is: what address will your visa be sent to once it has been issued? You need to put down a US address on your application for them to mail your visa and documents back to when they have processed it (and you'll want to be present at that address to receive it). i.e. if you will be staying in a hotel in NY, you're going to have to find a way to get your visa back in the mail after processing.

So it's not exactly romantic but it is cheap and clean and cute and has a great location...my aunt and cousin stayed at The Jane in the West Village when they visited last summer. Rooms are as low as $99/night, I believe, but they have bunk beds and are 50 square feet, which again, isn't ideal for say a honeymoon. The bathrooms are down the hall as well. They offer a larger room type but it's much more expensive, like $200+ so no longer in the remarkably cheap category.

http://www.gershwinhotel.com/   -- This place has a variety of price levels and is quite centrally located.  I stayed there many years ago and thought it was nice.

I too have heard good things about The Jane.

http://www.park79.com/ We stayed here a few years ago.  You can get a double where you share baths.  It's not bad.  I think there were two bathrooms per floor shared between 3 or 4 rooms without en suite.  Clean, decent decor, has basic amenities (air con, telly, hair dryer, free Continental brekky) and it is right off Central Park.  Only problem with our room was one of us had to climb in from the foot of the bed (or get in before the other).  Obviously not all would be like that, but our room was definitely on the tiny side.  It also had a basin in the room, which is nice.  We didn't have to brush our teeth/get a glass of water out in the public bathrooms.

Thank you for all of your responses.

My BF and were talking about this and we thought it would be way less expensive to rent an apartment for 1 month instead of money on hotels in the NYC/ NJ area.

Would you guys have any links to suggestions, reccomendations in this area, maybe a realtor that rents out an apartment on a very temorary basis?

My BF will be over in the states with me for 17 days, and the Hotel fee will be quite expensive.

thanks :)

When we looked for hotels we also looked at apartments (a friend we knew from Dublin now lives in Seattle and was going to come out to visit us) and used Craiglist for holiday/short term lets. TripAdvisor also has holiday lettings on their site with reviews...
