Moving from Nebraska to Peterborough After 17 Years in US
« on: June 03, 2011, 12:35:26 AM »
Hello!

You all seem so very friendly, that I thought I'd stop lurking and introduce myself.

My name is Lianne and I'm moving from Omaha, Nebraska (Go Huskers!) to Peterborough, Cambridgeshire in July. I've lived in the US for 17 years, but was born in the UK to British parents (so no worrying about that silly Visa thing for me!).  ;D I'm now 26 and have decided to move back to England to watch my two little sisters grow up. I'm excited about traveling all over the UK and seeing Europe as well as spending time with all of my family.

I still have to find a job and a place to live. (You think that would scare me, but I'm trying to look at it as more of an adventure!)

I've sold all of my belongings and am planning to ship a box or two of pictures and coats, and then take clothes in two suitcases as luggage.

Umm, what else? I'm scared to death of driving in England, I can't wait to eat my Nan's pickled onions, I've been watching British TV shows like Top Gear on Netflix religiously, washing machines that are also dryers make me nervous, so does having a tiny freezer and I can't wait for an Indian takeout!

I'm also excited Posh has made the Championship League and I'll get to see them play West Ham (I only like West Ham bc of Green Street and their song "tiny bubbles"), but I'm hoping one of the 5 ESPNs will show some Husker games! I did get to catch the bowl game when I was there over Christmas. :)

Ok, I think thats it! So hello everyone...!! :)

Welcome to the forum.  Like you I am British living in the US. I left when I was 5 years old and plan to return after I complete my graduate studies next year.  I have started the process early in terms of finding out flat prices etc as I will be living on my own when I return to the UK.  It's kind of daunting, but I am up for the challenge.

Good luck with everything and congratulations on your decision to move back home

There is good news.....you can get US college football on ESPN America or hook up a sling box at a friends in the US and you can watch any tv you wish.

That is good news indeed! :) Although I am determined to integrate as much as possible with UK culture (that means watching footie instead of US football!), having some college games available will help this fall.

Brigette, glad to know I'm not the only one out there who feels like they have two home countries! It is daunting to leave what you've known and go to England, but you are definately right, its a challenge, and I've always said, the bigger the risk the bigger the reward, right?! What area are you looking at moving to? Have you visited since leaving when you were young? Do you still have family in the UK?

Persephone and bookgrl, hello and thanks for the welcomes.

Hi,

Yes it really feels like having two homes even though I know more about American culture than I do British because of my years spent here.  Yes I have visited since I left a couple of times.  I do have family there  but distant family and that is the reason why I will be living on my own.  Currently I am looking to live in London and I am just familiarizing myself with the different zones (Central London, zone 3 etc)

I would prefer to get a job before moving, but we shall see :) but as I mentioned earlier, I'm glad I started this process early.  So much to do, so little time...

Welcome! I'm from Sioux Falls, moving next week to Leeds! Going to miss the Husker games too, as well as our annual trip to the Omaha Zoo!

I'm visiting the zoo tomorrow for the last time before I leave. I'm trying to check off all the things on my Omaha Bucket List before I leave.

I'm going to miss my annual trip up to Yankton. SD sure knows how to have fun. :)

What is bringing you to Leeds? Good luck on the move, hope it isn't too stressful. I still have 2 1/2 weeks before I leave Nebraska, then heading to the beaches of Florida for 3 weeks to visit family before hopping over the pond.

Florida for 3 weeks sounds like a good decompression! My wifes family is from Liverpool and Yorkshire, plus I got a job lined up in Leeds. Hoping there is a good zoo in Leeds, the kids love it!

Hello all! I know this is an older thread but I just wanted to comment that I am originally from McCook Lake, SD (close to Sioux City)! I am currently going to grad school in Phoenix, but was just back home for a visit over the summer. There sure is a lot of flooding going on! I can't believe what a small world it is! I never thought I would see people from near my small hometown! I routinely fly into Eppley Airfield and Sioux Falls airport when I visit. I am getting married this summer to my English guy and may be settling in East Sussex Autumn 2012!  ;D
