The best UK campsites
« on: June 09, 2011, 12:27:55 PM »
Been camping lately? Where did you go, and how was it? What is the best campsite you have visited in the UK, and where are you hoping to go before the summer is out? (Feel free to mention places you've been camping outside the UK too!)

Use this site for campsite reviews. People are honest and we've never been steered wrong!

As for our favourite spot, well, we love it but it wouldn't suit everyone. We don't like a lot of amenities, apart from nice clean shower blocks. We don't have children, so prefer places without playgrounds and child-friendly facilities - places that cater more for adults. Our favourite place is Penmarlam in Bodinnick, near Fowey (Cornwall). There's absolutely nothing to do there except enjoy the countryside!

As for overseas camping, we've not done it before but will be going to Chateau de Monfreville in Normandy this August. It has brilliant reviews on UK Campsite, so we're hoping it lives up to the hype!

Can anyone recommend a site thats welcoming to about 10 adults, who arent very loud and want to stay up a bit late in the Yorkshire area? We may want an open (but raised) fire as well and be near a beach. Whitby maybe?

Two or Three couples will also be driving, the rest by train/bus so have to be welcoming to cars and easy access to public transport links.

Thanks.

These are our three favorite campsites for kids, and we try to go to them every year. Love them all, which is why we keep going back!

No. Sadly, no fire pits at any campsites I've been to in the UK.

BUT I just got back from a camping trip in Virginia, and I'd have happily traded in the heat and the nasty bugs for a nice British campsite with no fire!

We've just decided to spend a few days camping in Cornwall this August, and funnily enough, I just looked at the site you mentioned!

But have you ever been to the following campsite? If so, can you compare the two?

Yes, we have! Only once, though, since we discovered Penmarlam and like it so much more. Penhale did have lovely walks, esp to the beach, nearby. The main problem for us was that we didn't feel the pitches were very level which didn't make for particularly comfortable sleeping. Also, it was a bit more crowded than Penmarlam. Both are nice, though.

Thanks for that, Chary! If you happen to be in that area - mid-Aug - let me know. It would be so fun to meet up.   :D

We're away from 17-22 August, but around the rest of the month. When were you thinking of coming over?

We haven't camped here, but often walk through this site when staying in the Lake District: www.hollowsfarm.co.uk/. It's an idyllic setting and there's plenty of space. Lovely for children too - as they can paddle/swim in the river which runs through the woods surrounding the site.
There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing

I'd highly recommend "Cardiff Caravan Park" in Glamorgan, Wales. We camped there late June 2011, as we went to a hen/stag do in Cardiff. :) The campsite was spotless and so were the amenities! Basically its hidden in the heart of Cardiff and adjacent to a river, so it has very picturesque surroundings. It about a ten minute walk into town and pubs! I can't wait to go back there! :)
