Advice for Sending Small(ish) Boxes to UK
« on: June 10, 2011, 03:17:30 AM »
Ok, I hope I don't ask too many questions lately, I'm trying to do my best to find the right areas for each question. My move is only 2 weeks away! So its just the little things left now and when something pops up, I start to panic (that's normal... right?!!?)

OK, well I'm not shipping anything over with me (no furniture, kitchen/household, etc.), but I'd like to send a box of pictures, yearbooks and some books over to the UK before I fly over. I don't want the extra weight in my bags and want to save room for all my clothes (and shoes and purses and more shoes and more purses and my scarf and coat collection). :)

I checked USPS for their flat rate boxes, but the 'large' box (which really isn't very big, maybe 12x12x6?) and can only hold 20lbs is $58.50! Does anyone know of a better way to ship smallish things? What I'm sending fits in that box and is only 15lbs.

I'd love to find a way to ship some of my things over (like a box of shoes and coats so I could make more room in my suitcases) if I could find an affordable way. At the moment, I'm just planning on paying the $200 with Delta for 3rd suitcase...

Thanks guys!

In my experience, it'll be tough to find a way to ship those kinds of boxes for much less than that, especially when your move is only 2 weeks away. What you should do is just consider how much having those things with you is worth to you. If it's even close to $60, I'd recommend doing it, just because it can be really nice to have those items just for nostalgia's sake.

Either way, whatever you decide, Good Luck with your move!!! It'll all be worth it once it's all finished.

Id recomend just checking an additonal bag for the 50 dollars. Even if they are small, they are probably going to be heavy which will cost you more. If its personal items you can't part with, use that bag as your carry on and check your remaning luggage.

I did ship boxes using Fedex, but at the time I had an employee discount. Even then my two boxes of scrapbooks and such ended up costing me over 250 dollars, and a month of fighting the incorrect customs fee's.

good luck!

I checked Delta's fees for checking extra bags and it said it was $200 for each additional bag? Did I read this wrong? If it's only an extra $50 I might be taking 3-4 extra bags! LOL

You're right, they are definitely worth the $60, I can't imagine not having my pictures of home to look at (even though lots are digital on my computer, these are from pre-digital days).

Even if I can take them in luggage for an extra $50, I'm wondering if the immigration questions are worth it. I'm travelling there on my US passport (even though I was born in the UK and a UKC I don't have my UK passport anymore). I've heard the more personal things you take with you can cause some questions for why you are entering the country. I guess I'll suck it up and pay the $60. I'm just trying to pinch pennies before the big move!

Thanks guys for helping me think through it. :)
