clearing divorce papers
« on: August 30, 2004, 10:14:47 PM »
We are going tomorrow to give our notice now that I have been in the country for more than a week. The lady when setting up the appointment was very vague and unsure about how long it will take for them to check my divorce papers (since they are from the US) and give the go ahead for the wedding....just wondering what everyone else's experience has been in this manner.

it depends what state you were divorced in - for some states there is no checking - eg California

It's the difference between knowing the path and walking the path.

Lipstick? Where woman? There is no lipstick!
She wasn't kissing your lips my darling

What's it gonna be Merv?
Interesting deal
She'll do it. If she has to kill everyone in this room. She'll do it. She's in love.
*sigh*
It's amazing how the path of love is so alike to the path of insanity

Mine were from Georgia, and it took maybe 3-4 days to get them approved at the local registry.

My divorce papers are from Iowa. I remember presenting them to the registrar at the registry office but all he did was check the name flick through them and hand them back to me. I never heard of having divorce papers "cleared". We got married over 3 and a half years ago. Maybe things were different then.

The registrar I spoke with had a list of states that didn't need further verification other than just the fact you had the final decree. I don't know which states were on it, only that mine [Georgia] wasn't. They made a copy of the entire decree, and sent the original off to the "head office" and within a few days I was able to go get my originals back.

Arkansas wasn't on their list either, and they didn't like my papers. I had to contact the county court house back home and have them send out more certified copies and a letter verifying their authenticity.
