Honestly, it's taken me a couple of weeks to come to terms with it. The Android doesn't seem as sturdy as the iphone. I'm terrified of breaking it but I have a decent cover for it. I really did like how the Iphone works (when it worked) and the Android was very alien to me but once you get your settings how you want them and the apps you use, then all is well. Plus, the phone was free and I only pay £22 for a £30 contract (Orange give a 25% discount to those who work in education and NHS).

Definitely don't judge all Android phones by Samsung.  Before the rise of smart phones, Mr A always advised me against Samsung (back in the day).  It was among the manufacturers who made less than stellar hardware (in his opinion). My HTC is definitely NOT flimsy and is probably one of the most well designed things I own.  And Hero was a mid-range phone.

My sister's iPhone 4 broke within two months of her buying it.  They replaced it, but even before that, she had issues with it.

Symbian?  When Mr A worked in digital forensics, they hated working with that OS.  It's supposedly really complicated to do the stuff they need to do to extract data and document things, so I imagine programming in it is more difficult.  He has a Sony Ericsson Vivaz right now which runs on it, and it never fails to baffle me on the rare times I have to fiddle with it.  He's probably going to Android when we upgrade, even though he loves the hardware on his phone.  He doesn't mind Symbian, but he feels like he misses out on apps.

It uses Maemo, but most Nokias were coming with Symbian installed.... he likes it cause he can log into work and fix things while at the pub (but that might not be too safe...) Hes a SysAdmin for an ISP...

ugh so my ipod touch broke this morning when I was checking my email. It just froze and then I tried restarting but it won't turn on now and my computer doesn't recognize it when I try plugging it into the usb drive. So I'm kinda trying to stay away from apple products. I only had the touch for like 2 months!

Androids sound pretty awesome. Does anyone know what it means when it says you can customise it how you like? Is that like the way the things look on the screen? Or is it deeper than that?

You can chose what apps you want and need, a lot of them are free from the market. If youre techy enough, you can work your phone from your memory card instead of the built in memory on the phones. You dont need iTunes to control your phone either..

I realise my post seemed a bit anti-Android but I didn't mean it to be. I think both Iphone and Android have their pros and cons and changing from one to the other did take me so me time but I don't regret my decision.

I like the apps available, I like the widgets and how you can customise your screen with so much more than just what apps you want on it. I like that you have a task manager so you can see what is running and how much RAM and memory it's taking up. I like that you can customise just about every single thing on the phone, like how loud I want my media volume compared to my ringer volume.  I LOVE that I can put an external memory card in and have a massive amount of more space. Can't do that with Iphone.

So, I'd say that if you want a good smart phone and don't want to break your bank in getting it, get an Android.

Although, with two curious little girls, I might go for a more sturdier build next time.

It means just that, you can customise it how you want. My husband and I have the same phone but they are completely different in how they look and feel. For starters you have multiple desktops, hubby has 7, I have 5, that can have what you want on it. You can change animations, backgrounds, fonts, icons - whatever you want. If you are more techy you can root your phone which opens up even more options

Ashley, I definitely don't think you were being too anti-Android, and you had a fair assessment of your experiences.  I just wanted to clarify for others thinking of going the Android route, not all hardware is the same.

They even make water and impact resistant phones with the Android OS. Motorola Defy comes to mind but I think there are others.

My two year old plays with my galaxy S all the time and has dropped it I don't know how many times, and it is just fine. I've been very happy with it. I came very close to buying the HTC--loved the look and feel of it. I ended up falling for the super-amoled screen in the Samsung that made for better viewing in any light and a better sound quality in the earphones.  I've had it since it came out last year and been quite happy.  I love how Android widgets let me personalize my screens--They are are a reflection of what's important to me now with multiple photos of my family, quotes I like, to-do lists I can check off without going in to apps, calendar reminders, facebook statuses, news headlines, etc.

I also liked the iPhone, but wasn't keen on being forced to iTunes.  Nor did I like how they work with people--seeming to feel they can ignore customer concern since they are top of the market.  The apps are more extensive though.

I think now days the quality of each is similar and it comes down to the little things that speak to you.

Does Kies work for you? I've been trying to connect it for ages with no luck. I reinstalled and it would connect but then it wouldn't upload the firmware update. Been googling about it and it seems to be a common problem and the only answer is that Samsung just don't give a toss.

I will admit that Kies is pretty sad.  When I first got it, it was near unusable.  It has changed completely this year though, so don't rely on internet stuff from before a few months ago.  I got it again a few months back and it worked well, then for some reason I had trouble with it and had to reload it and now it's working again.  I don't use it tons, but have been able to do firmware updates recently.

Well, I asked my workfriend in our IT dept about it, he just got a Galaxy S2 and he was able to upgrade my firmware via samfirmware using Odin. All that is greek to me but he took my phone and an hour later I have Gingerbread. Hooray! My last major problem solved.

I have given in and sold my ipod touch on ebay and used that money to subsidize a pay as you go iphone (not the newest one). I always felt that the only thing the ipod touch was missing was being able to use internet all the time and using it like you would a phone. Dh decided on a blackberry and we're still on pay as you go. So much for contract phones haha.

Btw, just found out that you can turn your ipod touch into an iphone with some new(maybe not even new?) attachment that has been created called the "apple peel". I'm not sure how it works exactly but it sounds like a very cool idea!

I had to look that up. Very cool gadget. I don't have an Ipod touch but if I did, I'd totally get this.
