Shipping back to the USA
« on: June 19, 2011, 10:30:05 PM »
Does anyone have experience with shipping companies going back to the USA from the UK? We're moving back next month and would like to get a few quotes to make a choice. We don't have much stuff (i.e. under 10 boxes probably under 100kg total).

I'm curious if you gathered any good information on this?  We're moving back at the end of this month, and I was thinking we'd use U Pack We Ship as we did on the way over, but would love to hear peoples' thoughts on other options!

I used Crown Relocations.

They handled all the arrangements with customs and it was about £850 (insurance included) for 15 boxes, they packed it themselves (quite nicely), hauled it to the container themselves and then when it arrived in the US they delivered it to our home and unpacked it all & hauled away the boxes for us. All in all it took 8 weeks to arrive at our home in California and we had to pay $36 in Customs Inspection fees. But they paid Customs and we just reimbursed them upon delivery. You're assinged a Relcation agent & have access to the location of your items 24 hours a day as you can track the Ship that it's on and the agent updates you at regular intervals so there was never a worry or concern about our stuff.

Highly Recommended.

If I recall correctly, I looked in the back of Time Out mag. At least in 2007 there was ad upon ad of reputable companies who would ship smaller amounts. They of course were trying to get the Aus/NZ business. They brought boxes to our house, we packed them up, and 6 weeks later, voila! I can't remember the name, but it can't hurt to look/call around.

We wound up using Anglo-Pacific. They provided the packing materials, collection (free on certain days of the week -- Tuesday and Thursday in Glasgow area), customs, and delivery. We paid for £550 for 9 boxes. They have a set sailing schedule which they post on their website so you have an idea of when items will be delivered. It will end up being a total of 6 weeks from collection to the US port (and I'm guessing another week or two for customs and delivery to our home in New Orleans).

The only thing that was confusing with them was their order form. It apparently is a bit confused and the form they read was different from the one I had submitted (though it could have been a complete confusion of people and quotations), so I had to give them the information a second time. Even then, neither of us realised the quotation was not for airfreight (as I originally submitted) until after collection. That wasn't a big deal, but it would have helped us in packing if we knew the time frame was 6-8 weeks rather than 1-2 weeks (some things were shipped which would have been carried with us if we knew differently).

My memory has just recalled that it is TNT magazine that has all the shipping companies advertising on it, not Time Out. They even advertise online.
