Finding local eggs, milk, etc.
« on: June 23, 2011, 09:43:37 AM »
How does one go about finding a source of local eggs, milk, produce, etc.? Would that sort of thing be in newspapers, word-of-mouth ...? I think I'd like to make the switch, or at least give it a try, with getting fresh things like this locally instead of from Tesco or Asda, but I have no idea where to even start to look for farms or whoever does this sort of thing! I'm in Batley, West Yorkshire on the off-chance anyone knows something local to me, but otherwise, just a hint on how to find this sort of thing would be great!

Yeah, if you have access to things like a local organic/traditional butcher, farmer's markets, farm shops, so on, that would be the very first place I'd ask before going online.  Some of the box schemes do not use totally local (or even domestic) items, but most do when they can.  You can also use the bigger chains when you have to.  For instance, Morrisons uses a lot of British farm produce.  It's not the same as getting everything local, but for things that aren't produced in your area, it's better than buying something from abroad when there are domestic alternatives.

Try this old thread, though some of the links might be out of date.

Otherwise, this site will help you find local farm shops and farmers' markets. (Though that site seems to only find the bigger markets. A thorough Google will find you some smaller ones.)

And for local milk, you can see if there's a local milk delivery in your area here.

Have fun! I love shopping at markets and farm shops!  :)

Also try local markets and market days if your town doesnt have a centralised market if you dont want to arrange something regular.

Our market has butchers, fishmongers and green groceries all stocking meat and veg from S Yorks and fish fresh from W Yorks... Milk and Eggs are sold at most veg stands...

Waitrose, at least here, sells locally reared organic & free range eggs. If one is near you, may want to try there.

My husband is a market trader and I highly recommend searching those out.  There are always lovely, fresh, locally made items there--including eggs, cheeses, baked goods, fresh veggies, lovely meals--oh yeah, and my husband's amazing jams, chutneys, marmalades, curds and honey.  There are often lots of small farmers markets that aren't as well advertised.  I can think of ten farmers markets within about 15 miles of our house.  Food festivals will often have many of the same people, and when you find providers there, you can ask them about how to source their stuff outside of the festivals.

Another source that sometimes gets forgotten is pick your own farms where you can go get all the local fruit and such that you would like--a great family outing. http://www.pickyourownfarms.org.uk/

Or just ask your neighbours!  :)
