Old wooden table that reeks of cigarette smoke.
« on: June 24, 2011, 10:22:17 AM »
I've been doing some googling, but haven't come up with a definitive answer.

I just bought a wooden table from a charity shop.  It is beautiful!!  I didn't notice it in the store (the whole place smelled a bit odd), but when it was delivered this morning, it was like being knocked over by a wall of very strong, stale cigarette smoke.  In less than a hour the odour has filled our entire downstairs.

I was wondering if anyone has had experience with getting rid of a such a smell on wood before (if it's even possible), and if so, if they recommend any particular products.  I'm probably going to go have a chat with the local hardware/diy store, but I thought I'd see if anyone here has encountered this before too.

It's such a bummer, I was so excited about the thing.  I thought I was getting such a great, deal, but...:/

I can only imagine the smells that are going to come out of this thing on a very damp, rainy day.  I can already see myself donating this back to them if I can't fix this soon.  The smell is SO STRONG.

The only thing I can think of is sanding it down and re-finishing it.  I can't imagine the smoke has gotten all the way through the wood, so it may just be a matter of taking away a bit of the surface layer?

Sugar soap's pretty good at getting nicotine stains out-at least that's what it says on the label! I got some from Wilko's when we moved into our place last year, and it's been great for lots of cleaning jobs. Stefunny also had good ideas. Good luck!
