student bank account when taking a break from studying
« on: June 25, 2011, 09:11:07 PM »
What exactly happens to a student bank account with over draft if you decide to take say a year out? Does it no longer have a 0% interest rate? Or does it just continue since the bank wouldn't really know?

I'm not sure what technically happens, I think it depends on the bank and the account.  I know when BF finished uni, no one asked him about it for 2 years, so he just let it stay interest free for as long as he could.  Eventually a teller asked him if he was still a student and then he said "No, just finished actually."  :P

Yeah, with my student account, I didn't do anything after I finished university... then one day I got a letter from them saying that my account was being switched to a graduate account... and then a year or two after that I got another letter telling me it was being changed to a regular current account - so I still technically have the same account I opened as a student back when I was 18 (the account numbers are the same and my PIN numbers are the same), but it's just been upgraded and adjusted by the bank over the years.

Check your account details. I know my daughter has 12 months after she graduates until they begin to charge her for her overdraft.

Well technically the account details say nothing about taking time off from being a student (I can't find anything on a year out or anything close). After graduating they turn it into a graduate account which continues with an interest free over draft. However, I'm a bit of a different case.

Depends on the bank, but I imagine nothing will happen.  It's a private commercial matter between the bank and its customers, nothing to do with any over-arching laws.

A bank will normally only open a student account for someone who has a student loan, or equivalent amount, being deposited.  They may contact you if that doesn't happen, to query your situation, but probably not.

Awesome! That's all great news then :).
