I don't think I've seen PYO here (East Sussex), but there are pumpkins in all the farm stalls.

I made pumpkin pie from actual pumpkins last year. Wow, it sucked.

You have to have the right pumpkin. Jack-o-lantern type pumpkins don't really taste very good, generally. You need a pie pumpkin, meant for baking with.

But yea, I agree, the extra work, etc just doesn't pay off in this case.

Libby's aren't butternut squash, but they aren't normal pumpkins either.  I think they are a special variety.

My mom used to say they (Libby's) were squash too, and she used it every year.  I think it's one of those rumors that go around.  I don't believe it though - if it were squash they would have to declare it on the ingredients.

I did my own pumpkins last year from pie pumpkins I found at Tesco.  It worked okay, I had more problems figuring out the crust and finding a pie pan (I'm using a sandwich tin, whatever that is).  It was a pain but nowhere near as hard as making our own cider (with a blender and clean thin tea towels to squeeze it!).  I can't afford to ship Libby's in - the cans are too heavy!

We got our pumpkins from a farm shop in Barky Thorpe, Leicestershire http://www.rootsthorpefarm.co.uk/

Really nice folks, I wonder if they'd do a pick your own situation. I know that they have an untapped source for pies there. This year I'm going to make loads from their free pumpkins.

I don't know if it's 'Pick Your Own' or not, but Riverford (the organic veg box company) will apparently have Pumpkin Days on their farms coming up in October - it was in the little newsletter with our veg box this week.  So if you're near one of their farms (throughout the UK), you could maybe look into that.  There's not an announcement on their website yet (not that I could find anyway) - but it was in our little paper newsletter this week as I said.

A link with info on the locations of their farms (in Devon, Cambridgeshire, Yorkshire & Hampshire):

They've made an announcement about when and where the days are this year:
