I totally agree with Legs. While the UK is quite progressive, there is sometimes a speedbump or two that you don't necessarily run into until you get to know people.  DH, for example, has an interesting reaction to social housing as his family got a lovely house through Thatcher's "let to buy" policies.  That said, celebrations were had in our flat as I now have a number of friends and at least one cousin who will be getting married soon!

Married 04/13/11, in NYC.
Applied for Spouse Visa the following week, with express service, and I was approved 4 days later!
Arrived in the UK 05/20/11.
I took the stupid LIUK Test Oct. 2012.
We were granted ILR In Person in Croydon on 04/23/13.
Got BRP 2 days later, in mail box - it just appeared.

Yes. It was looking like this year would be our first year in SEVEN where we haven't gone to a wedding (there have been a lot of weddings).  Now, we have three.  ;D

Jennie...
I am going to the "Wedding from Hell" on Sat... Well, actually, on Friday, Sat and Sunday! Can you believe?! A three day wedding?
Wanna go in my place, since i'm sure you have a nice dress... or several!!!
It is my hubby's friend Ben who is getting married, and he is OK, but his wife is just plain MEAN.
She told me, while we were applying for my visa, that "Immigrants are ruining England."
Nice, huh?!
And now, even tho we are broke (visa!) we are paying out 500 pounds to go.
She is wearing a Vera Wang dress... I am wearing a T.K Max dress... And cooking pasta for the 3rd time this week.
LOLOL!!!!

LaraMascara, props for your humour :).  The England/UK thing is really really important to people here, though.  My husband gets all up in arms just because Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland all have their own assemblies, but England doesn't.  The one in Westminster is the UK parliament  ::).  For real.  It's one of those distinctions that seems unnecessary, but will really get people's dander up if you don't make it.

Glad to hear you found a dress for that wedding.  Post pics!

Did I see Andy Murray bow to the Duke and Duchess yesterday?

Great... Now, not only can I NOT drive without my hubby turning green, or figure out gas marks on the stove, I also no idea where I live...

Along these lines, it's interesting seeing the formation of a national (UK-wide) football team for the Olympics. A lot of old feelings coming to the surface apparently.

In a nutshell, Great Britain and Northern Ireland, while one country, is allowed to field 4 teams in international competition, but not for the Olympics. Can they pull together?

Just wait till people come visit you over here.  You'll start gently correcting them about the whole UK/England thing, then you'll point out where all the best curry houses are (what, just me?), and then you'll nearly hit the roof of the car as you attempt to escape what will surely be your doom when they drive on the WRONG side of the road on a windy road in the Lake District.  ;D I have never been as close to scaring myself to death as I was in that car, and I regularly jump over picnic tables at a full gallop. (Why they wouldn't let us drive and INSISTED on driving themselves is a different question).

(p.s. I only have one dress (well, plus my wedding dress, which will go into rotation this year I think). I am rather famous for only ever wearing that one dress.  But once you've got one that works...you work it.  ;D )

When I was in London on BUNAC, and very confused about the UK, England, Scotland thing, one of my very calm co-workers took out a paper and drew a map.  Not a very pretty map, but it really helped me understand the UK version of separate but together.  I don’t know a better way to put it.

She basically drew a circle and wrote ‘England’, then two others in there sorta appropriate geographical spots and wrote ‘Scotland,’ and ‘Wales.’  She then circled that and titled it ‘Britain’ (I might be fuzzy here, perhaps all of the British Isles were included on her map).  Then she drew a place for N. Ireland and told me that that was the UK.

What is still really confusing is that I believe that Jersey and Guernsey are English but not British?

The Channel Islands and the Isle Of Man are "Crown Dependencies". The Crown Dependencies are British possessions of the Crown, as opposed to overseas territories of the United Kingdom. Being independently administered jurisdictions, none forms part of the United Kingdom or of the European Union.

That's all explained in that video.  It's really worth a watch.  He does have some corrections on his blog, and plans to do a revised video.  His blog is worth a read as well.  He addresses things like the myth of only 10% of Americans holding passports.

If he's a UK Yankee he should show himself.  :D
