Any 4th of July plans?
« on: June 28, 2011, 10:37:59 PM »
What are people doing for the 4th of July?  Anything?  Either on the weekend before/after, on the day, or some other time in July?  In the US or in the UK?

I've seen some people mentioning here and/or on Facebook - asking if there are any public events out there for the 4th here in the UK (lol!).  Anyway, feel free to post here if you know of something.

Not for the 4th, but something that might be akin to a familiar celebration, there are these Battle Proms Concerts going on at various locations in the UK during July and August (in the middle England 'shires'):

It's going to be a busy weekend!

I'm working on the Saturday, then stopping by Mrs. R's for a bit with hubby, before heading to Manchester to stay over MiL's.  We're helping MiL Sunday morning with preparations for FiL's 70th birthday party and family get-together which will be Sunday afternoon / evening.  Then back to work on the Monday.

Fourth of July holds a lot of US memories for me, the most recent being sitting on the roof of my South Philly house (of which I rented the top floor) watching the fireworks over the stadium.  It was truly boiling hot up there, even at night!

We'll be on holiday in Somerset. We usually have a 4th July BBQ on the closest Saturday, we had it last weekend though as we are away this weekend.

The girls and I will be partying down with all the yanks in Horsforth on the Saturday. The 4th is my birthday (30! Eep!) so I've taken the week off so that I can have the house to myself, which may seem really lame but I've not had the house to myself since the girls were born and all I crave is peace.

Always regarded Independence Day as just a day off -- no big deal. Maybe watch some of the fireworks broadcast on TV but otherwise  [smiley=dozey.gif] In the olden days my dad would take me to see local fireworks displays and that was fun but now it's all these metro-extravaganzas. Blah.

Huh!  Who are you kidding?!  I know you're going to be at the new Krispy Kreme donut shop every day!  ;)

Oh my yes!  I would have to say that the 4th of July is my all-time favourite US holiday!  All those memories...

Spending all my allowance, along with one of my older brothers, on fireworks when I was a kid - we'd be up at dawn, shooting off firecrackers, smoke bombs, bottle rockets, (illegal) M-80s, those ash 'snakes' & all sorts, until late when we did our own neighbourhood night display.  I **love** that fireworks gunpowder & smoke smell!!!  Wonder we didn't blow off any fingers or toes!  (He did manage to set a corner of one neighbour's field briefly on fire once, but was able to extinguish it & she was nice about it because he confessed, was sorry & made amends - small town like.  ;))

Or else going to the nearby lake, to watch the display there.  And then when I was at univ, sitting on Campanile Hill (in Larrytown - Rock Chalk Jayhawks!) on a picnic blanket under the stars, watching the fireworks display there on hot summer evenings.

Plus, like Ashley, so much about the 4th felt like it was all for my birthday - although hers is actually on the 4th (unlike mine).  So many picnics & BBQs & birthday parties & homemade ice cream & hot, wonderful summer weather.  It's a fabulous holiday!  ;D

This will be DH's first 4th of July in the states.  I hope it will be a festive & fun day for him.  We'll go to the celebration in the city park, listen to the band concert, etc. then go to my daughter's for pulled pork, corn on the cob, strawberry shortcake, and then to my son's (outside the city limits) for fireworks.
I've learned that my memories are often rose-tinted, I hope this holiday will be as happy as I think they used to be.
And I hope you ALL have a very happy 4th!!!  :-)

Going to Launceston to see Hayseed Dixie, first time to ever see them perform on the 4th, should be good!

Totally agree. My mom hated the stains the snakes left on the driveway. Teehee.

Our new grill arrives on Friday (Homebase is having huge sale if you're in the market). So I'm taking it over. If I can't show BF the fireworks I have to show him a proper 4th feast:grilled corn in the husk, big fat burger, hot dogs/sausages, potato salad...albeit not on the grill.

DH and I will probably go to MIL's for lunch over the weekend, like we do every week,  she is 83 yrs old now.  Will probably talk about her will and all the problems with the SIL and her money!!!!!!

On a brighter note DH and I will go to the Eridge Horse Trails either Sunday or Monday, I haven't made up my mind which day I want to go, otherwise we will just stay at home, maybe I can get out and do some gardening if my asthma and allergies settle down a bit.

Anyway hope you all have a wonderful, fun-filled 4th of July weekend no matter where you are.  Enjoy the time you spend with family and friends and if you have to work take it in stride and know that you are appreciated for the sacrifices you make to make it better for someone else.......

If I can't show BF the fireworks...

Google, m'dear!  ;D

Fireworks are sold (and legal) year-round here, and looks like there are several vendors in the Nottingham area.

We have this one in Leeds:

http://www.greatnorthernfireworks.com/

However, there's a garden centre nearer to where we live that stocks some fireworks so I'm sending DH there for sparklers at least.  Where we live is pretty densely residential (and businesses) so I wouldn't shoot anything big off around the houses here.  I could take it to the park, I suppose - but I'll probably be too tired (and possibly sloshed) by then, so will settle on the sparklers.  :)

We bought a Weber kettle charcoal grill from Homebase last year!  ;D

That's where we got ours. The owner of the shop says they do good business around this time of year because of the Americans in the area. He also threw in free sparklers when I told him it was my birthday. We like him.
