Thanks for your help--in our case this will be our second time taking the dog over but we had to start the process all over.  When we went to the UK the first time she just had an avid chip in her which was fine at animal reception.  When we went to our local vet however they could not read that chip so put in a new one and used that on her paperwork.  Fast forward to now DEFRA said there was no way to link the old titer with the current stuff so we had to start over.

Just had another panic moment again-- turns out the vet used the old vaccine date (2008 done in the UK) not the booster (2011) but thankfully put both chip numbers on so we called DEFRA and they said the UK chip number links the 2008 vaccine with the 2011 titer so it's fine

Another warning to be sure you watch over the vet like a hawk!!!  I gave him a copy of the old titer to follow and they still sort of screwed up

Not really applicable to your case but what I am not sure of - will the USDA vet sign off on the form without the titer?
I'm not sure if my answer is what you are looking for, but when I moved my two cats to the UAE, the country did not require a titer for import - I sent APHIS 7001 to the PA USDA vet for signature and was fine. (Maybe different for dogs? Not sure.)

I'm not sure of anything any more, given what I've been through...  All explained (and whined about) in a different thread!  Can't believe I'm going through many of the steps of this process a second time (with the extra financial burden)!

In my case, I didn't understand that the APHIS 7001 had to be signed and stamped by the USDA vet 10 days before travel.  I *thought* I did the USDA step, and then had a 4-month window to book my dog's flight.

So, one of the few things I *can* say for sure.. that as of April 2010, the USDA vet in Annapolis, Maryland DOES require the original Kansas titer results.  Don't know about USDA offices in other states or future regulations ... but one would hope that all the USDA offices are consistent!

The other thing I can say is, even if your pet's personal vet is USDA "certified" (or whatever the correct terminology might be..), DON'T rely on the vet to understand the process or correctly guide you.

On the first go-round, my dog's vet put dates in American format (mm-dd-yyyy) despite the fact that the EEC 998 form CLEARLY says to use the UK format (dd-mm-yyyy)!!!!  Made a special trip back to the vet just to re-do the paperwork on account of that ONE error, never mind all the other hassle I've gone through!

Oh... well for anyone who has followed my saga on a different thread, I'll just repeat what I was told by the DIFFERENT vet I'm now using to get me through this process at the last minute...  for the tick/tapeworm step, the time of the treatment must be entered on the form in military format ... yet another detail my dog's regular vet might have screwed up!

I am so GRATEFUL for the people (equestianerd and many others) on this website who are kind enough to thoroughly familiarize themselves with the requirements, down to the minute detail, and help those of us who are struggling to put it all together!

Thanks, Kathryn!  I could use some massive big hugs!  My doggie is starting to look at me a little strangely as I keep approaching her with open and beseeching arms!!

I'm a bit confused--so what happens if your pet doesn't meet the requirements? Does that mean they just go into quarantine for only 21 days?

Looks like it.

Pets in quarantine
Pet owners with pets entering quarantine from 3 July 2011 to 31 December 2011 may be able to have their pet released from quarantine from 1 January 2012 and before the current 6 month quarantine period has elapsed, if they have prepared their pets to meet EU rules.
See Defra website for further information.

(Though the website doesn't seem to have much more information right now.)

If they're willing to consider animals in quarantine now to stay < 6 months once they hit January 1, 2012 implies that the quarantine stay post-Jan 1 would be pretty small.

That said, I'd feel really bad forcing my pet to stay in quarantine at all, especially if it just requires 3 weeks of work and 1 vet visit pre-travel.

I agree, but am thinking worst case scenario--the times I can move and my pet can move are different. It's a ways away, but the logistics are starting to look a bit daunting.

I noticed on DEFRA's website that one of the requirements is that the pet must travel with you...if that's the case I might have a problem and find him a friend to stay with in the U.S. for a while.

I don't see that on their website - just on the PDF checklist (which might be a typo, as the rest of the website just says the route has to be approved, not that the pet needs to be accompanied). Probably worth a call to DEFRA to confirm.

If you go to:

http://www.defra.gov.uk/publications/2011/06/30/pb13582-bringing-pets-into-uk/

And click on the PDF for the leaflet for the new rules, on page 3 under the section

"Is your pet prepared?" it you must answer yes to the following questions:

Is it microchipped?
• Is your pet currently vaccinated against rabies?
• Was it vaccinated after it was microchipped?
• Have you got an EU Pet Passport or Official Veterinary Health Certificate from
your vet certifying the microchip and vaccination?
• Have 21 days passed since it was vaccinated?
Are you travelling into the UK with your pet on an approved route?**

Well if anything I have lots of time to sort it out. You're right a phone call could do wonders...but I bet they charge £199 per minute :P !!

Yeah, that's what I said above. ;)

I called them once when I was doing the process - it's a regular UK land line number, so no extra charges to phone them up.

Whoops, I read too fast :p!

I *think* in my gut it doesn't mean that YOU personally have to be with your pet, but someone has to be traveling with the animal on the plane. So for say, if my dad comes out to visit me he can bring my cat with him, and problem solved!

Possibly, though my pets flew unaccompanied (back in April 2010) with no problems. And the airlines/DEFRA seem big into requiring an agent to facilitate drop-off and/or pick-up, so it's not like you're that involved anyway. (My mom dropped my boys off 4 hours before they flew, and I picked them up 2 hours after they landed, and the rest of the time they were with airline/DEFRA staff.)

Is this effective with the changes after January 1st, or is that the rule now?
