Gifts for parents/wedding party
« on: July 01, 2011, 10:11:08 PM »
Argh.
What did you guys do (or are you doing) for gifts?

Does anyone have any ideas for something nice/different/not too crazy expensive that we can gift as gifts to:
a.) parents (his UK, my US)
b.) grooms-boys (I'm trying to avoid the flask thing...)
c.) my maid of honour/his sister (very classy; doesn't really wear jewellry)

I'm about to lose my mind! Any ideas much appreciated!

We bought individual presents for people rather than the same for everyone - we just tried to spend roughly the same amount on the bridesmaids and ushers. I remember getting nice Welsh whisky for a couple of the guys since I'm Welsh and the wedding was in Wales. I got my bridesmaids some china in her favourite pattern for one, a Tiffany necklace for another and a spa voucher for the third one. Like you, I find the flask thing sooooo dull.

I've only got a maid of honor so I'm giving her a purple bag (wedding color) some purple bath stuff and a spa gift certificate.

For the parents, I'm going to make them photo books after the fact.

We're also going to give our parents photo albums when we get the pictures. We gave all of our adult wedding party the same thing - quaiches (whisky tasting bowls) with a personalized engraving. My DH came up with the messages for each of his groomsmen and I came up with ones for each of my bridesmaids. We knew it was something they each would like. Our flowergirl, who is 3, got a fairly large stuffed highland cow which she thanked me for very politely, dropped about 30 seconds later, and never looked at again. Her mother tells me she's not very into stuffed animals. Oops.  We also got one for our ring bearer/page boy but he wound up not being able to make it so we named her Harriet and she's sitting on our entertainment centre.

For the wedding favours we gave the 3yos coloring books and crayons (Little Miss Princess and the RoyalSpecial Wedding) and the less than 1yos got little stuffed sheep.  Cleaning up at the end of the night, the flower girl hadn't so much as opened her crayons but the parents of the other 3yo who made it said it was brilliant and their daughter did a lot of colouring. My flower girl did like the stretchy bracelet my mother made for her, so it wasn't a complete loss.

Uh, back to you, ipod shuffles are about on par with a flask and can be engraved. Cuff links are fairly traditional, if you think they'd ever use them. A box of Hotel Chocolate truffles can be customized to fit a budget. A bottle of perfume or cologne if you know what they like.

Do you know what any of their hobbies are? Cooking, gardening, sports?

We did:

celtic knotwork brooches for the mothers
custom cufflinks for dads best mana and usher
best man also got a very cool tankard (from a ren faire)
bridesmaids got knotwork necklaces and earrings, chief bridesmaid/maid of honor also got wineglass with pewter dragon

for the guys we really personalized the cufflinks - his dad had Dunlop tartan, my Dad NE Patriots Pat logo, Best Man Superman and Usher Red Dwarf.

At a tourist shop here in town, one that makes an effort to carry things made by people who live in the Highlands. I believe the cow was manufactured afar, though.

Thank you all so much for your ideas! :)

I'm thinking like you'd all said that we'd do individual gifts...just what those will be, especially for the parents, is yet to be decided.

We are doing photo albums, but they won't be ready till after the wedding, of course. I think it's just a thing where I'm from that the night before everyone gets something. It's making shopping quite a bit o' fun. (winks)

I do like the whiskey idea, especially for our master of ceremonies, who's keen on it. I've never heard of whiskey tasting things -- must definitely look those up. The best man is beer-y, so I'm hoping we can find something for that.

I may have found something for my maid of honour (jewelry-wise)...which leaves the parents. Goodness -- this is hard. Think I can ask them to register?? hehe...
