Mexican Food TV Show
« on: July 07, 2011, 10:25:44 AM »
I know that many of you on here love your Mexican food and wondered if anyone else had caught Tomasina Miers' new show on (I think) Channel 5 a couple of nights ago?  She's known for her love of mexican food and in this series she is in Mexico cooking local recipes.  I particularly fancied the raspberry sorbet with tequila!  (Not called a sorbet in Mexico but I can't remember what she called it.)

YES I caught last 10 minutes of THAT episode and set the DVR to take anytime it shows up!

I hope it shows up again as I would like to see what she makes ;-)

I watched it as well.  I see that Mission is sponsoring it.  I hope that means that we will start seeing some more Mexican food ingredients (like real corn tortillas made with masa and not flour tortillas with some added corn meal) being more readily available.

That Chile recipe was interesting.  With the apples, bananas and raisins, it was almost curry or tagine like.  She makes guacamole exactly like I do.  However, I don't like pork scratchings and will stick to eating my guac with tortilla chips.   ;D

YES!! I utterly LOVE her "Mexican Made Simple" book - it's fantastic and I cook from it all the time. I didn't know about the show as we don't get a tv guide anymore so I'll set up the Freeview+ box to grab the rest of them. Thanks very much for letting us know!

If you can bare it...some of her recipes are on dailymail online in the food section, also an interesting interview with her where she talks about her food issues.

Episode 2's on next Tuesday, channel 5 at 7:30pm. DH has set it on the DVR. If tvtimes had done a piece on it LAST week, instead of this coming week, it would've helped. Then I wouldn't have missed episode 1. Oh well, never mind. There's 8 in total anyway! ;)

Only picked up on it halfway through and to be honest we aren't too impressed with it. She showed them making empanadas (i think) with tortillas and a lovely mix but showing people how to make at home she used puff pastry that to me was too thick. I know she said the empanada originated from Cornish tin miners going to Mexico in the 1800's as a derivative of the Cornish pasty but she brought it back full circle and basically made a spicy cheese and ham pasty!

I've preferred watching Rick Stein's Spain.

I have enjoyed the show, mostly because I really like Tomasina Miers and her enthusiasm for Mexico.  But I agree, I would like the show even more if she used more authentic ingredients, like the masa harina, rather than puff pastry.  It would go a long way in making Mexican food more popular.  It is great food, and people in this country are used to interesting, spicy foods.  You don't need to "dumb" it down for them.  Her puff pastry empanada had more in common with a ham an cheese croissant than it did with what she was shown eating in Mexico.  Cheddar cheese, ham and dijon mustard?  C'mon Tommie, you can do better than that.

The selfish reason I want her to do this is not because I don't know where to get the ingredients.  I know where to get them, but it is a pain.  If she did the recipes with more authentic ingredients, then people started bugging their grocery stores for them, then maybe they would be easier to find.  I bet 15 years ago it would have been difficult to get ingredients for Thai meals, but you can find them in any grocery store now, because of the demand.  I would LOVE to go to my local grocery store and be able to get real corn tortillas.

I went on the Mission Webpage site, thinking they were sponsoring this show because they were going to go great guns with their product...but it is just more of the same of what is already here with Old El Paso and Discovery.  I was disappointed.

Oh boy! All this talk of Mexican food is making me hungry. Anyone up for going to Chipotle with me?! :) Or Lupita in London?

Where can I find the ingredients to make margaritas? (Besides the tequila)--it seems that British people aren't really into mixers as I can't find apply liquor or anything!!

And on another note-if anyone needs to know where to find amazing corn tortillas-they are sold at a stand in the borough market. I know its not as easy as going to the Tesco around the corner but you can buy a bunch and freeze them (they are vacuum packed) and I swear they are the best tortillas i've ever tasted!

I'm not sure what you mean, bry30538. I only use tequila, Triple Sec and fresh lime in my margaritas, all of which are easily available.
