Hi All!
« on: July 08, 2011, 08:57:52 PM »
Hello,

I had this site recommended to me recently by a coworker and I can already see how great it is :)

I'm Charli, I'm 22 and married my 23 year old American fiance on 11 February 2011 in British Columbia, Canada.  I'm putting together the paperwork for his spousal visa right now and ANY advice you can give will be REALLY appreciated. I'm really nervous about it all, as I'm sure you all have felt! I'm terrified I'll do something wrong, or not include it and it'll be rejected.

I tried looking for threads but there are so many I got a little overwhelmed, so if people happen to have anything relevant bookmarked then I would love it if you passed them my way.

Hoping to have him here in the UK in September, after having not seen him since February 18th (we took a week's honeymoon!).

Thanks,
Charli

Hello!
People are VERY helpful. Go to the visa section and ask any specific questions... They will be answered.
The main thing is to not leave anything off the application, and send in all original documents - not copies.
And apply for the rush response service before you send in your paperwork!!!!

Married 04/13/11, in NYC.
Applied for Spouse Visa the following week, with express service, and I was approved 4 days later!
Arrived in the UK 05/20/11.
I took the stupid LIUK Test Oct. 2012.
We were granted ILR In Person in Croydon on 04/23/13.
Got BRP 2 days later, in mail box - it just appeared.

Hi SnowLass and Lara - thank you! :)

I'm a little reluctant to just go post in the forums as I'm sure my questions have been asked a hundred times over! So I'll do a little more digging before I post anything!!

I totally know what you mean about jumping through hoops, and I haven't even started yet! Phew!!

I don't think we'll be applying for the rush service, our budgeting is based on him being away and working for that month and we could use that month's wages. So...as much as I'd love to see him ASAP, we have to be responsible and admit that we need the money more :(

Welcome to UKY. You can apply using priority and specify the departure date. So he can still stay in the US. You just don't want your separation to turn into many months, which is possible if you don't use priority.

Welcome to UKY!
Yes in the visa section you can many posts on exactly what people sent ect.
It can be overwhelming but using the advance search function is brilliant!

Good luck!

Use the priority! The wait can be up to 6 months without it.

It is hard to begin planning your move without knowing you HAVE the visa... I think the fee is only about $150 more? Maybe more, I forget... But, it is worth it.

I used Rainier Movers for my stuff and they did a PERFECT JOB.
Nothing was broken, and it got here EARLIER than expected.
And they helped pack and unpack, and took it from inside my NYC apt to inside my UK apt... I spoke with David Wiviott. He handled everything. He was great.
You pay a $250 deposit, and the balance within 30 days of getting the bill.
We paid the bill, and 3 days later they called and said my stuff was here, and delivered the next day - no hidden fees.

Thanks for all your advice :)

I didn't realise that about still choosing the departure date on the priority service, think that definitely sounds worthwhile! I thought that once you got the visa in hand you had to travel within 28 days? Or is it up to 28 days after your intended travel date?

Sounds really good about the movers, I'll look into that :) He wants to bring all his tools over (he's an electrician) etc and we weren't sure how expensive that would be.

Thanks again!
Charli

Just thought that I would post this link as it proved extremely useful for me when we were going through the visa process in April. I am the UK half so needed to provide most of the information lol!

Just send it all in with priority service within 28 days of the date you want to leave...
Rather than send it, and have to wait much longer than you want too...

Hello Charlie.. Welcome to the forums! I'm new here as well and learning/discovering new things everytime I'm on here. Don't be afraid to post, I'm sure there are things I have asked people on here about that are in older posts, but they're nice to bring up and keep fresh for newcomers like myself  ;D
