Hello from Florida (hopefully Scotland soon)!
« on: July 14, 2011, 05:32:07 AM »
Hey there guys,

I've lurked for quite a while, but never joined. Given recent events, I figured it was about time to. :p

I'm from (and living in) Florida. My fiance is from Cumbria, England, currently living in Scotland. While we were on holiday in Chicago last month, he proposed and I accepted! So we're planning our smallish wedding for March of next year, after which I'll apply for a spousal visa to join him in Edinburgh.

These forums have been of tremendous help to me already. It's great that there's a place like this where people share their knowledge and experience with others facing the same issues, and I'm grateful for it. Over the coming months, I'll appreciate any advice or tips anyone can offer. It's a daunting journey ahead, but I'd say being on the same continent is pretty worth it. :D

Thanks for the welcomes!

The heat and sun here in FL are intolerable most of the year. I'm very fair-skinned and can't go out without burning, even on mild days! It's approaching 90F/32C right now, and it's not even 10 AM, gah. Even if he moved to the US, we'd still be heading waaay north. He about dies every time he visits. :p

I grew up in Tennessee. Love it, but could never live there again. I don't sweat, I faint.

Anyhow, I'm down here in the sunny South of England and I'm wearing a heavy jacket and slippers. It's been a cold Summer down here.

I'm from Jacksonville, and I too find the heat intolerable. I can't wait to be wearing a sweatshirt in the middle of the day in August (which is when I'm moving)! :D

My parents have been looking for property in Tennessee for years; I'm thinking they'll probably try to move once I've left. Know anything about the Maryville area? I think that's where they were looking.

Ohh, Jacksonville. I'm in Pinellas County here. Where are you moving? You must be getting excited with the date approaching so quickly!

I am so excited! I'm just trying to tie up some stuff here, and it's driving me nuts.

My grandparents live in New Port Richey, and I love going to Tarpon Springs for some Greek food!

I was born in East Tennessee; that part of the state I'd love to go back to. Beautiful, and not as hot. If they like snakes and rocks, I have sixty acres outside Nashville I'd love to be quit of (just kidding -- I'd love to get rid of it, but it has family issues).

You and I have a lot in common! I'm also from Florida in a long distance relationship (though my fiance is Irish living in Belfast) intent on moving in the new year. I don't know about you, but I'm really worried about getting used to the change in the weather! Perhaps we can help each other through this process? Good luck!

All the Floridians put your hands up. I'm from Florida too--St. Pete. I moved to the UK three and a half years here and am loving it. This is my first post on the forum. I've lurked for years and finally decided to register and join in the conversation.

I have a Brit friend who went to New Orleans in August. He understands now.

It is so nice to wear a jumper in July!! Free AC!

Welcome.

Not a Floridian, but a Kansan who quite happily lived in Tampa/St Pete (and easily acclimated to lovely sunny hot & humid weather, largely free of winter temps & snow) for the better part of 7 years (1997-2004).  Now living in northern England (since 2004).

I very much miss the heat & sunshine - that's the main thing about the US that I do miss.  I don't like wearing coats & heavy clothes & not being able to wear shorts & flip-flops year-round & all that.  :(

Anyway, welcome to the forum, all!  :)

Not a native Floridian, but I lived there for 5 years and then moved to Scotland.  So yeah, a bit of a weather change, but I prefer it. (Shhhh don't tell Mrs R  :P ;) oh wait, darn it, she may see this  :P)
