Hello!
« on: July 17, 2011, 02:41:28 PM »
Hi folks.

I'm an American expat who's been living in the UK for 7 years and I just wanted to say a brief hello to my fellow expats.  I'm an Arizona boy living in Birmingham with my lovely Northern English wife and two cats, and like many of you I miss a lot of things about the US and I love a lot of things about the UK ("neither fish nor fowl," as my wife says).  This site came to my attention through an expat friend of mine, and I hope to have a chit-chat and some fun here.

Hi, Brit-in-love.  I don't promise that I'm the world's foremost expert on Anglo-American cultural relations, but I'd be happy to help you bridge cultural gaps and things of that nature as best I know how from my 7 years here.  :D

My Brummie is rubbish and probably always will be, unfortunately.  I just don't seem to get the pronunciation and intonation quite right.

As for the diversity of accents in England, to say nothing of the whole of Britain, I was blown away when I found out there were so many different regional accents in such a relatively small place!  People here seem to be quite adamant about defending their local identities, and justifiably so - each region has something unique to be proud of, from what I've seen.

Why thank you!  Mr. Bryson does have a way with the spoken word and the written word, doesn't he?  I'm envious that you've been in his presence.

I am a big fan of Bryson, but with a caveat. He is the chairman of the English Countryside Alliance....which is fine really. But why does Bill get to move to the lovely Yorkshire countryside but nobody else is supposed to? It's a bit drawbridgeish green wellieism.
I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

I'd recommend his book "Notes From a Small Island" - great observation of Britain from an American.
