My daughter is named Athena. I liked it because it was a strong name, and although it is unusual (unless you're in Greece I guess), it isn't a "made up" name or spelling.

When I was younger, Athena was the name I wanted to name my girl. I always got the piss taken out of me for it though. Plus, if I couldn't get Jon to go for something simpler like Tess or Ava, he certainly wasn't going to go for Athena. :) Lovely name.
There are two things in life for which we are never truly prepared:  twins.

Plus she'd have her own awesome rock & roll song!  ;D

I really dislike the current fashion of giving babies surnames, like Taylor, Tyler, Madison, Connor, etc. etc. I have no problem with the principal (both my father and my grandfather had their mothers' maiden names as given names) but I hate the fact that every other kid has one of these names. It will become so quickly dated.
I've never liked it either, but respect the right of others to use their names of choice.  That trend has become rather fashionable in the last 20 years or so.  I see tons of it where I live.  If someone shouted for Taylor or Connor in this area, each name would probably get a minimum of 10 responses.  Such popularity caused me to rule out either Sarah or Emily for my own child.

I found out years later that I gave my own daughter a name (Hannah) when it was just starting to get popular.  It was the only name upon which her father and I could agree.

Another thing to watch when naming a child is the initials.  Harold Oscar Green might be a fine, honorable name but the initials (HOG) could cause teasing or embarrassment.

I love the name Charlotte! No children here and there won't be any, but I always loved the name Alice Rose. So I can see a cat by that name in my future!  ;D
I've got several names reserved for future cats myself!

I'm in the "non-children" camp, but, I work at a nursery and hear some nice names all the time.

My favorite boys:
Rylee(it's mind boggling how much trouble and destruction can come from one adorable boy).
Rhys(he's a mini old man-no joke-and I love him).
Callum(he's a handful, but, he's great once he lets you in).
Harley(usually in cahoots with Rylee, but, great).
Caden(Aww, there are just some kids that want that I want to take home!)

I also like Kevin and Micheal as unisex names.

DH is playing Half-Life and one of the characters is called Alyx, and I thought that was a cool way to spell it.

Its quite amazing how you can get used to some names, I am now quite happy calling Harpo by his name, and Thor, not to mention the kids at my favorite playgroup, Bibi, Biba, Otto, Etta, and Edith. You can get used to names you don't particularly like...

One of my best friends who works in the media was going to name her son Ulysses, a friend of hers wrote a column for the Sunday Times Magazine at the time, and this friend wrote a whole article about the fact that she knew someone who was going to name her baby Ulysses and how horrible it was...needless to say, she called her son Harry.

My friend is her niece's nanny, and she posted on facebook the other day that there is a new boy in their playgroup whose name is Frodo.  ;D  The massive LOTR geek in me is like "YESSSSSSS!" but then the other part of me is thinking "That poor kid."  ;)

That's a cruel thing to do to a child.

Another of my pet peeves is made-up spellings of traditional names, just to be "different." It's not different. It's stupid.  [smiley=furious3.gif]

Yeah, I feel like they could have at least made it a middle name if they wanted to use it so badly.  It's not even like there is an okay nickname to come out of it, like if they had named him Samwise or something (he could go by Sam!).  What do you call him, Fro?  :(

My friend's son's name is Samwise, but apparently it was a family name.  ??? At least that's what they told people. They call him Sam.

I knew a girl named Ladasha.

Except it was spelled La-a.

Totally for serious.

I've officially changed my middle name to my maiden name. Any children we have will also have my maiden name as their middle name. I wouldn't say it's a unisex name, I'd say it's more asexual. It doesn't sound particularly male or female, it's just a last name. You'd never use it for a first name. Except for one guy cousin who is single with no kids, I had all girl cousins (and a sister), so at this point that name isn't going to be carried on. I'd like to see the name stay 'alive'.
Same here -- only I never had a middle name. Both the kids got the maiden name as their middle names as my father was the last of our line to have that surname.

I resemble that remark! But you can blame my mother! ;D
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon
