Books from your childhood
« on: September 02, 2004, 07:04:21 PM »
Since we've discussed books you love and books you hate, lets discuss books that make you think of your childhood.

Me personally, it's all the Dr Seuss books. We only had a couple (Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham) but they were the first books I learned to read on and the ones I'd read to my sister and brother when I was young.

Those and a book about Beauty and the Beast. Not a lot to read but fantastic pictures.  I'd always hog that book.

Hop on Pop was another favourite Dr Seuss.  I also liked Chicken Little and all of the Curious George series.

I loved "Go Dog Go" and "Green Eggs and Ham."

And my Mom used to read to us on car rides-mostly James Herriot.  So James Herriot books always remind me of childhood.

What a great idea!

For a FIRST book memory, Pat the Bunny.  LOVE IT!  Still buy it for all expectant friends.

Little Women, Nancy Drew, Wind in the Willows, The Poky Little Puppy, the Narnia Chronicles, A Wrinkle in Time...

Someday, after we have mastered the winds, the waves, the tides and gravity, we shall harness for God the energies of love. Then for the second time in the history of the world, we will have discovered fire.

"On the 13th of May, in the jungle of Nool, in the heat of the day in the cool of the pool. He was splashing enjoying the jungles great joys when Horton the Elephant heard a small noise. " I used to read that one to my sister - who's 10 years younger than I - constantly for about two years.

For me, though, I remeber the first "big" book I read when I was ten; "Puppy Lost in Lapland". I remember all the Dr. Seuss books, but the first "young adult" book I ever read on my own is the one that really sticks out.

After that it was The Madeleine L'Engle series, The Dark is Rising, and on and on.

Terinth - ever read "Uncle Shelby's ABC's" ? It's not really for kids, but it cracks me up every time I read it.
I know I'm late - where's the booze?

Oh loads and loads! The Anne books by L M Montgomery, the Milly Molly Mandy books, Mrs Pepperpot, tons of Enid Blyton, Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfield and its follow up The Painted Garden and the "Veronica" books by Lorna Hill.

Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfield

That's funny James and Molly are reading that right now!   :)  Molly LOVES it.

I picked it up in a charity shop-it was in a set of Penguin classics that I got for £3.

Ramona Quimby series

Oh yeah! The one thing I remember most about those books is the story where she waited and waited for no cars coming until she crossed the street and ended up being late to school. The same thing happened to me the year I read that book.

Shel Silverstein

My favourite poem was about the guy who was so hot and took everything off and eventually took his skin off and just sat in front of a fan with lemonade in nothing but his bones. Now that I think of it... it's kinda freaky.  :)

So hard!  There were so many!

But, the "Frances" books about the little badger named Frances was a favorite (I wonder why...?)

I also really like Little Cloud, about a little cloud that follows the big mean clouds around.  It's a great story...

I acctually collect books (esp. childrens and old 1800s text books) so I end up finding new favorites all the time...

Thumbelina, Grimm's Fairy Tales, anything by Lewis Carroll and many others. My dad used to read to me all the time and taught me to read at an early age. Kind of strange to think that one of my favorite childhood memories is of my dad reading The Jabberwocky to me.

Ooo, I had Thumbelina too.  I think there were records that went with it.  And gosh, nearly forgot about Ramona Quimby!

One of my favorite books that I can remember was about a doll named Edith and her friends the bears. The three of them were photographed in all sorts of interesting positions. I was about three and the books really captured my imagination (I am sure it is because of the photographs vs. my books with illustrations.) The author/photographer was Dare Wright.

I spent alot of time in my room as a adolescent so all the kids classic were my friends... and of course being a girl I red all the nancy drew and the little house books... I love to read... most of my education came from works of well written well researched works of fiction...   Jo

i miss readin to my kids... maybe i'll get the chance again in a few years with a new family or grand kids... man give a kid a book and you give em the world
It's the difference between knowing the path and walking the path.

She wasn't kissing your lips my darling

What's it gonna be Merv?
Interesting deal
She'll do it. If she has to kill everyone in this room. She'll do it. She's in love.
*sigh*
It's amazing how the path of love is so alike to the path of insanity
