I loved reading Roald Dahl and Shel Silverstein, the Madeleine and Eloise books, and Grimm's Fairy Tales.  They gave me a love for the uses and sounds of words and, probably, my twisted sense of humor.  I still love to read these books today.
When I find a funnier sig than twistedncynical's, it will be here.

"The Secret Garden," best by far. And does anyone remember Pippi Longstockings?

I loved the Pipi Longstocking books! Also I remember when I was very young reading the "Ramona" books..."Romona the Pest" .  Also for you gals around my age...Remember reading "Forever" by Judy Blume? lol  It got passed around our Junior H.S. and then "Wifey". For most of us it was our first "sex" book even though when I look back now it was mostly innocent. I was talking to one of my Scotish friends here and she said those two books got passed around at her school in Glasgow also. So funny!

I still have my favourite childhood books - my boys read them as small kids and I'm hoping their children will read them as well.

I loved Eighteen Cousins, Jellybeans for Breakfast, anything illustrated by Steven Kellogg (especially There Was An Old Woman), the Lyle the Crocodile books, the "Something Queer is Going On" series, Ping, Five Chinese Brothers...anything and everything by Hans Christian Anderson.

Of course, Cat in the Hat books go without saying...  :D

I read Wifey when I was about 10 or 11...then moved on to Friends and Lovers by Jackie Collins when I was 12... ::)

NOT a wise move, might I add.  Way TOO young for some of those mental images... :o

What about Flowers in the Attic then? that was another "pass around" and warped as anything.

Yep - read Flowers in the Attic and the rest of the series.  I must have been about 11 then, too...it was my godmother's daughter's copy.

And this is probably why I curl up with There Was an Old Woman and my Hans Christian Anderson books now when I need some comfort... ::)

Well, as I was pondering Judy Blume's book list; I realized I think I only ever read 'Are You There God...' (thought I'd read more)

And, speaking of Jackie Collins... I remember getting obsessed with Sidney Sheldon from a very young age... anyone remember The Other Side of Midnight, or Bloodline?  I ravaged them ALL... I LOVED his writing, up until about 10 years ago, when it didn't seem so intriguing anymore...

And this thread brought to mind my absolute favorite book, which I read four or five times, and, thanks to this thread  ;), had to Google like mad to remember the title and the author:  Sarah & Katie, by Dori White (no one's heard of it, right?).  Can't explain it, but I LOVED that book.

Then of course, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe.... which I will always be thankful to my mother, who encouraged me to continue reading through to the end to find out what happens; after I'd thrown the book across the room in a burst of anger and tears at the part where Aslan is... well, I won't spoil it for those of you who have YET to read it!

I'm actually putting that book on tape (well, cd) for my aunt, who is bedridden with MS and listens to things all the time.  Hmmmm, maybe a good gift for my 10 year old nephew as well...?

Hmmmm, come to think of it... would anyone else be interested?

Oh yes - I read both those Sidney Sheldon books.  Along with Rage of Angels.

I also read a book called Hey Dollface - anybody else remember it?

No but that reminds me about Valley of the Dolls by Jacqueline Susann - another teen pass around.
