The only Indians I knew in the States were medical doctors or high level scientists. Probably because H1-B visas were the only path to immigration for them.

Hi

I'm Indian as well and going a little deeper - there's many many Indian police officers, bus drivers, Janitors, retail shop staff etc etc here in the UK. What you'll 'tend' to find is that they'll be in the main concentration areas of the country where many do indeed reside. Further out and you'll perhaps not see them in these sectors of work/jobs.

Indians in the US are more in number than the UK, they're just spread out over a much wider area and I'd 'guess' that they're mainly on either coast - much as the rest of the US population spread, so I'd guess there's actually quite a similar if not more Indians doing the above mentioned jobs.

I'll agree though, that in the media and in the larger populous cities of the US, you will see a very high number of professional level Indians too.

Going to the higher level of this topic, I've been visiting the USA to see the vastly super extended Indian family since around 1987 and I've not really noticed 'more' interracial couples in one or the other country. I guess I'm a little different from the 'usual' Indian upbringing in that i've seen mixed marriages in friends of the family and later whilst growing up, actually within our family - so I don't really bat an eyelid - whereas other Indian families pop their veins and the mere mention of it !

I will say one thing though, slightly controversial, but I have mentioned it before, but the UK does 'indeed' have a deep set Racist undertone from a significant proportion of the British white indigenous population - not 'all' of course, but a larger percentage than you may think...

To balance that above, I think I've mentioned it before, but I've encountered many times what I call 'positive racism' here in the UK, which I don't mind in the slightest - it's a conversation starter actually! - the negative forms of racism I've experienced as well - water off a ducks back to me, but other's really take offence to it etc.

Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!

Points duly noted guys. Let me emphasize something though. I come from Oregon where aside from the Portland area, we have a mainly rural setting. Its a beautiful place with a lot of good people. Problem is a lot of those nice christian people are also racists. They think its normal. You'll hear a lot of "when I was young you never saw (n-words) walking around, now look at it," etc. I never even saw a black man up front until I was about 12!

I have Hindu and Muslim friends that I went to university with  from various countries and backgrounds, and they have all had experience with being cross referenced negatively with racial stereotypes. So hindu friends likened to terrorists etc. We just have a lot of uneducated people here that think their views on life and immigration are the best.

I will say though that as of late, it seems hispanics/latinos are the primary target of American racism once again. Its a tag game  ;D Point being outside of urban epicentres across the country, I'm pretty sure you get the same thing, taking individual attitudes into account.

As an aside, at least in my view, I have seen waaayyyy more Indian, Pakistani, and Middle Eastern people in the UK than over here.

I don't doubt that at all, but that's only been for the last ten years or so, since September 11.  South Asians in the UK have been battling racism for many more years than that.

Of course you have, because there are many more there than in the US as a percentage of the population.  India is a Commonwealth country, and the UK is a lot closer to the Middle East and South Asia.  Which makes it even more understandable that you'd see even more racism there.

D, I don't think I'd agree with this one.  There are still very few Indians in traditional 'blue collar' jobs in the US, other than the stereotypical 7-11/Dunkin' Donuts/gas station owners.

Perhaps, but stats don't really show that:

Quote
About 44% of all Asians have a Bachelors Degree or higher compared to 24% for the total US population

- 25.3% for Whites, 13.6% for Blacks and 9.9% for Hispanics. Among top Asian groups, Asian Indians lead with about 64% people having a Bachelors Degree or higher, followed by Pakistani (54%)and Chinese (48%).

- About 71% of Asian men and 57% of Asian women aged 16 and over were in the labor force. Among top Asian groups, Asian Indian men had 79% participation in labor force and Filipino women a 65% participation in labor force.

- About 45% of Asians were employed in management, professional and related occupations, compared with 34% of the total population

- 21.4% for Whites, 12.3%for Blacks and 9.6% for Hispanics. Among top Asian groups, Asian Indians had most employment in management, professional and related occupations at 60%, followed by Chinese (52%) and Japanese (51%).

- The median earnings for Asian men ($40,650) and Asian women ($31,049) are higher then the national average for both men and women. Among top Asian groups, Asian Indian men lead with highest median earnings of $51,904 followed by Japanese ($50,876) and Chinese ($44,831). Among women, Japanese lead with highest median earnings of $35,998 followed by Asian Indian ($35,173) and Chinese ($34,869).

Exactly:

- in the UK, people of Indian origin make up about 4% of the UK population (1.4 million).

- in the US, people of Indian origin make up just 0.9% of the US population (2.8 million... but the US population is 5 times larger than the UK population, so the proportion is much smaller).

I don't think that those statistics necessarily contradict my statement.
