Travel Health Insurance, Suggestions?
« on: August 01, 2011, 12:04:22 PM »
I need to buy travel insurance for my trip back to the US.  I've gotten a couple of quotes from STA and Tesco, but TBH I don't really know the difference between any of them other than price.  I don't really like feeding the Tesco monster, either.  I just can't really get my head around all of it.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a company?  I'm looking for cheap.  £40 would probably be the most I would be willing to pay.  I don't have any pre-existing conditions or anything like that.  I did have asthma when I was a kid but I haven't needed an inhaler for anything in almost 10 years, so I'm not going to bother declaring it (it seems like most wouldn't cover it anyway?).

Anyway,  halp!  :)

I don't know it this helps, but we have had a family yearly policy with Direct Line for years, and made many many many claims and they have always treated us really well, helped us out, and paid our claims really quickly, no questions asked.  And travelling with two kids, well, there is always a trip to the doctor or two!!!

I usually use either Boots, Endsleigh or STA for my travel insurance.

I just spent 2 weeks in the US last month and paid about £43 for my travel insurance with Boots (at the moment you can get 10% off if you book online - my insurance should have been about £48 before the 10% discount).

The most important thing I look for in travel insurance to the US is enough medical cover, just in case - I got the Silver policy with Boots, which covers up to £10 million in medical expenses.

I do have a pre-existing condition and I was able to get annual cover for me and DF in Europe with Columbus Direct for about £65. I imagine single-trip without medical conditions would be cheaper, even adding the US.
Arrived as student 9/2003; Renewed student visa 9/2006; Applied for HSMP approval 1/2008; HSMP approved 3/2008; Tier 1 General FLR received 4/2008; FLR(M) Unmarried partner approved (in-person) 27/8/2009; ILR granted at in-person PEO appointment 1/8/2011; Applied for citizenship at Edinburgh NCS 31/10/2011; Citizenship approval received 4/2/2012

Virgin Travel was pretty cheap for a year long policy, especially without any 'diagnosed' pre-existing condition at that time

American Express - also pretty decent priced and they actually covered my pre-existing autoimmune condition which no one else likes to do

I second Columbus Direct if you've got a pre-existing condition - their online questionnaire is REALLY good, and tailored to your specific illness. I got my travel insurance for them for our 2 week trip to the US last year and it cost me £50, and the next nearest quote was over £200 and they made me ring up to speak to some clueless phone jockey which was pretty humiliating. So yeah, Columbus were great, even if you have a pretty serious illness.
Summer 97 - first visited friends in London
99-00 - studied at Uni of Sussex on exchange
Feb 02 - moved to London on BUNAC
Sep 02 - WP granted (IT skills shortage list)
Sep 04 - WP renewed
Sep 06 - WP renewed again (screwed by 4-5 year ILR change)
Sep 07 - ILR!
March 09 - Citizenship!
July 09 - bone marrow transplant :(
18 Sep 10 - wedding!
Mar 12 - half marathon in Paris! 1:47:12!
Oct 12 - Amsterdam FULL marathon! 3:48:23!

I also highly recommend Columbus Direct for pre-existing condition coverage. We went ahead and bought a year-long family plan with them because of this!

I meant to say Columbus Direct, not Columbia. Sorry. So, yes, another vote for Columbus!  :)
