I'm still not always sure what someone means by purse, because although I know what I'd call a purse is a handbag, I've heard purse used for both change purse and wallet.

My understanding is that, in the UK, a purse is a wallet/coin purse. The larger sack you stick the wallet/coin purse into, what we'd call a purse, is a handbag or a shoulder bag (depending on strap length).

Men still carry wallets, though I don't know if a (natively BritE speaking) woman who keeps her (UK) purse in her pocket, not her shoulder bag, might refer to it as a wallet.

I have managed to switch to saying either handbag or just 'bag' now after several strange looks when I first got here. I'm not sure about what a woman who carried her purse /wallet in her pocket would be. I've been trying to think and I can't recall ever hearing a woman say.

I find I switch to more of a change-purse type wallet while in the UK because I always end up with so many dang coins! So it's easier to think of that as a "purse".

I've always switched between calling mine a purse and a wallet - I often just use the two words interchangeably (I'm a native BritE speaker).

In general though, 'wallet' is usually used to refer to a billfold (generally carried by men), while 'purse' is used to refer to either a coin purse (http://d200fahol9mbkt.cloudfront.net/item/133953/coin_purses.jpg) or a purse that holds both change and cards (http://www.piajewellery.com/images/products/large/4139.jpg) (although sometimes these are also called wallets too).

I'm not sure about what a woman who carried her purse /wallet in her pocket would be. I've been trying to think and I can't recall ever hearing a woman say.

It doesn't matter if it's carried in a handbag or a pocket, it's still called a purse... why would it have a different name depending on where you carry it :P. The name used generally comes from the type of purse/wallet (i.e. billfold vs. change purse) rather than where it is kept.

I use both. I have the wallet type for paper money, cards and photos, and a change purse type for coins. If we are out for an evening, I will put some cash into the change purse just to make it easier to have cash and coins in one place. I empty the 1, 2, and 5p coins out every couple of days but it still amazes me how fast it all adds up. We keep the 1 and 2p coins in one container and the 5p ones in another. We figure we may as well keep saving them for a rainy day or as mad money.

I don't know why, but I hate how "Crimbo" sounds for Christmas! There is no good reason for it, I just don't like how it sounds! (Weird, I know...)
