UK: Rioting in north London
« on: August 07, 2011, 11:13:52 AM »

Hope you north Londoners are all safe & weren't out rioting.

Has this affected anyone on here?
Ring the bells that still can ring

I'm stunned by the devastation caused.

People might want to let family and friends in the USA know they're alright, they may not understand the geographic proximity to where you're living.

Asked my BIL about it because they live around the Green Lanes area, not far away from Wood Green & all.  They stayed in last night.  Said they didn't know anything about it until they saw the news this morning!  They said they heard a lot of sirens but that it wasn't unusual so didn't think anything about it.

Quote from one of my friends:

So: Tory scum, stupid cuts, royal wedding, and now proper rioting. We are definitely in a stable time loop with the 1980s.

We gonna rock down to Electric Avenue
And then we'll take it higher
I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

Ive only seen video of looting coming from the shopping centre there. Breaks my heart as my Mum grew up in Wood Green & Tottenham to see all these things happening..  :(

Your post is a bit prophetic about history repeating.  Sort of, but not really.

We're not near a high street, but I hope this is going to be resolved soon.  Stupidly crazy. It sounds like there has to be a better system with working with families of those shot or even just injured in police activities (remember, these are people who have NOT had a trial, whether the media is right about them being "gangsters" or not), but the looters, of course, are just looking for an excuse.

This is totally crazy. We were in London just last week and were staying in Walthamstow, just next to Tottenham. Glad we missed it!  I feel so bad for those innocent people who got stuck in this. There was a story in the Metro about the guy who lived above the Carpetright shop and he had to leave his flat because it was in blazes. Everything he owns is gone. So sad.
There are two things in life for which we are never truly prepared:  twins.

It would be interesting where the looters live because I think I heard that the word was put on Tweet? or something that there was going to be an opportunity in Tottenham. Welcome to the electronic age! So I'm thinking people from around London can show up for the opportunity to loot. Professional looters?

My boyfriend got sent home from work in Edmonton a couple of hours ago-they are worried that looters are headed there next. Shops and cars were vandalised last night in Enfield of all places. The violence that is occurring now is completely unwarranted and i'm waiting to see what the police/government is going to do to put an end to it.

Oh hooray, now it's spread to Hackney, Bermondsey, and Lewisham.

It does make me wonder if this would be quite as widespread if it wasn't the school holidays...
Summer 97 - first visited friends in London
99-00 - studied at Uni of Sussex on exchange
Feb 02 - moved to London on BUNAC
Sep 02 - WP granted (IT skills shortage list)
Sep 04 - WP renewed
Sep 06 - WP renewed again (screwed by 4-5 year ILR change)
Sep 07 - ILR!
March 09 - Citizenship!
July 09 - bone marrow transplant :(
18 Sep 10 - wedding!
Mar 12 - half marathon in Paris! 1:47:12!
Oct 12 - Amsterdam FULL marathon! 3:48:23!

The press keeps blaming twitter, but its not that. Its using the BBM feature from their Blackberry. Just saw through the Guardian (??) that RIM (Blackberry manufacture) are going to try to release BBM logs to the police to help them find the ringleaders.
